I wondered for years why car magazines liked BMW so much

But then I bought a 740il about 10 years ago and I got it. I am not saying that the Camaro might not be faster than the M3 or possibly even faster around a track but, unless you only care about the numbers, you will almost certainly prefer the M3.

I just finished shopping for a new car. I tested the M3, IS-F, CTS-V, S4, and some others. I have owned 3 Audis and I really like them but the S4 just isn't in the same league with an M3. The S4 just doesn't have the power and it suffers from the same handling issues that all my Audis had, slow turn in and lots of understeer due to the extremely heavy front end. The IS-F is a nice car if you don't really intend to drive it hard. The tranny is impossibly slow on downshifts, but interestingly it upshifts very quickly. The ride is harsh without imparting as much feel as the softer M3. CTS-V is not that bad. Power is tremendous, transmission is pretty good, brakes are good, ride is a bit harsh but not bad. The seats on the CTS-V suck. I don't know how you could get Recaros, with all those adjustments, that still won't provide support or comfort, but they managed it. All in all the CTS-V is a not all that bad car, a real surprise for an American car. If the CTS-V wasn't so hideous looking and there was no M3, it would be my pick of all of these cars. The M3 was just so good at everything. Transmission was incredibly fast, handling precise and firm but not harsh (although it gets pretty harsh on the hardest setting of the competition package), brakes were great, all around a beautifully balanced and refined car.

My point is that if one were simply looking at specific numbers there are cars that beat the M3 in one way or another. Some accelerate better, go faster, perhaps even pull more G around a skid pad, but none of them offer the balanced refined package that the M3 does. It is interesting to note that if you look at the times around a track for all of these cars the M3 is the best. It's interesting because the CTS-V and C63 AMG have better power to weight ratios and better torque, but in the end the overall package of the M3 makes it faster.

Those are some of my gripes...but they HAVE gotten better.....I'll give you that.

However, I still think MOST domestic cars look like they are assembled by a bunch of monkeys.
Ahh, not the 2011 Mustang GT I drove...there were no huge gaps, body panels were dead on, interior panels were lined up together with great build quality. The issue I had is the interior materials aren't up to an M3 status but are not bad at all. I almost want to ask you are you sure you are talking about a 2010+ Mustang? I mean the mags even love the interiors of the Mustang.

The 335i + a tune >>>>> M3 for daily driving. Better value/thrills imo

That said, the horsepower wars are over. No body needs 500+ horsepower, I am literally yawning these days reading about new gen muscle cars pumping out cheap and enormous power. I can already see 18 year old boy racers accidents increase.

Rather have a 412hp/295lbft M3 than a 550hp/550lbft Camaro or Mustang or Corvette.

the ZL1 will definitely beat the GT500, it was built to do so(well if ford does nothing).
The ZL1 is basically the CTS-V coupe, but with less weight.

Considering that the HPFP needs to be replaced weekly, does a 335 then still qualify as a Daily Driver?

I disagree. Based on the cars I've owned, I'd say M3 > 135i+tune > 335i+tune when it comes to thrills (even as a daily driver).

Don't bother... it will just start another argument. It is amazing how many people who have owned both cars agree with you yet guys who have only owned a 335 will argue otherwise. My M3 is my DD and in that role it is great. I have not owned a 335 (but have driven many extensively) so I will refrain from having an opinion on which is better as a DD. Having said that, MOST people who have owned both seem to say M3 based on reading these threads.

Regardless, it is like talking to a brick wall so why bother?

I just don't get it. What's thrilling about a turbo that revs to <7k rpm? I drove a 335 for a weekend (loaner) and thought it was as uninspired as my parent's X3.

You crossed the line with this statement

Pirat335i I don't own M3 my current sadan is 2011 IS-F and I for one would never come on this forum or any forum for that matter and start trash talking about M3 or it's owner. Remember were your at it's M3 forum, of course your going to receive this type of treatment especially with the with comments you've made. If I went to 335 forums and said my F will ass rape your 6 banger, wanna be M3, daddy borough me a 335 for my 16 birthday you guys would go ape shit and rightly so.

And from my experience 335 owner talk more crap than most, all because by adding chip, downpipe, maybe bigger intercool and Flux Capacitor they can beat any M3, IS-f, Vette, Audi, Porsche, GTR, Lambo, Ferrari, Bugatti, F-22 Raptor, Space Shuttle, and the Star Ship Enterprise possibly time it self. They can finale prove that the time dilation theory is true, as object ie 335 gets closer to speed of light time it self will slows down allowing 335 to beat even time.

Two months ago while I was at the gym this 18yr comes in with his friends to work out, well they start talking about how his JB3 chipped and other assorted modded 335 will destorys Vettes,M3, Mustang etc and that he can hang with Porsche. He then he crossed the line when he started to talk crap about my F not realizing I was the owner saying "yea I'll crush that blue toyota parked out side those car aint shit" So I decided to teach my young friend a lession. I informed him that I was owner of the blue piece of shit and that I would be more than happy to test his migthy 335 but I would not degrade my IS-F with racing lower model car such as 335 I had to mess with this kids head I told him I would infact use my other blue piece of shit my 2004 dodge his response bring what ever you got.

So I went home and picked up my 2800lb modded 2004 SRT-4 with AGP Stage 4 turbo kit using Delta 38 Dual Ball Bearing Turbo, Upper and Lower Hard Pipes with HKS SSQ BOV, AEM Cold Air Intake, Turbonetic Wastegate, Super beast front mount, DCR racing clutch rated to 700hp, Coolingmist Methanol injection kit, etc. We raced three time from dig, 40mph roll and 60mph roll, and I crushed his soul with my little blue neon every single time. The Moral to this story any car can be made to go fast in straight but it takes much more than going fast in straight line to have a true luxury sport vehicles like M3, C63, Porsche, Vette, and IS-F
Well said! We need more people like you on this forum.

This is going way off topic, but how's the '11 ISF so far? I hear they made big, big improvements over the previous generation. It's awesome (IMO) to see a company like Lexus start to produce some proper sport sedans/sports cars recently - more competition with BMW is better!

Thanks pman10, Last April I drove 2010 ISF at Lexus Insider event held at Millville Race Raceway in NJ, I was able to auto cross F by myself, I almost got kick off track for coming into hot on my turns lol. I then took ride around lightning which is there 1.9 mile fast track with Jeff Andretti at helm what cool guy and yes his dad is you guessed it Mario Andretti. He whipped me around that track so hard I had to grab the OH SHIT handle for the first time in my life. That ride change my mine on what IS-F was truly capable of in the hands of good pilot. But to answer you question yes huge improvement in ride quality not as harsh it's firm but complaint and more importantly steer feel has been greatly increased.

And the best part of the day was when my buddy and I won the lottery in our group and we were able to get a ride in the legendary LF-A driven by Scott Pruett. I have never been in car going that fast ever in my live and the sound of that V-10 was like banshees ripping at your soul it was absolutely intoxicating like nothing I have ever heard before or since what a day.

That interior design is a huge turn off for me.
