Out of State Dealer Purchase Advice

I'm considering an out of state dealer (BMW) purchase of a CPO, 2011 E92 M3 with 6,700 miles. Exterior color is Alpine White, interior is Fox Red; car has DCT, Comp, Convenience and Premium package.

The dealer is listing this car for $66K. What do you think is a fair price for this car and at what price should I start negotiating? In addition to a signed sales order from the dealer that states the agreed upon price, what else should be in hand prior to me making the trip out of state?

Any other general tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If it's the one in Wayne, NJ it's actually mineral white, not alpine. I dunno if that matters to you, but I noticed they classified it wrong.

$66k is kind of high, especially since it doesn't have heated seats or enhanced premium sound. It is CPO though... tough call. Signed sales order should be fine, but be prepared to drive home again if something doesn't go right. It's only about 200-300 miles away from you so shouldn't be bad. I've been looking for awhile and saw this before (I'm in Virginia) and was going to pick this car up, but the lack of heated seats and premium sound turned me off.

Thanks for the info. I just noticed the color is mineral white as well as I did a VIN check. I asked for a ball park on trading my '07 335i with 59K miles and was told about $17K, which I think is very low, especially since CarMax offred $21K about a month ago.

1)The fact it is a cpo is a very good thing.
2)Ask for a carfax and look it over carefully. Is it a local car. Did the dealer sell it to the original owner? Original location? Was it a lease or personal owner. Any consistent issues. Did it get a 1200 mile check up? Who did it? Note the in-service date as that tells you the end of the cpo
3) Did the previous owner(not leasor) buy "extended maintenance?" If so it's yours.
4) Price: You should be able to get a new one for $1000 over invoice. Go to this website bmwconfig.com/ , configure a new one like the one you're thinking of and I think you'll see your car is over-priced. Look around cars.com ( all over the country) and compare what other (particularly private sellers) '11s are selling for.
good luck!

I was told it was not a lease and brought in to the dealer recently for trade in. CarFax indicates the 1,200 checkup was performed.

Yeah, I noticed the asking price is high and was thinking somewhere around $60K would be more in line.

autotrader.com

cargurus.com

Run last 7 of VIN at bmwvin.com to see all options and production date, but get in-service date from dealer for warranty and CPO expiration. If you don't know the package and option codes, go to http://************/97ntw7u for 2011 coupe option info. Run the Carfax and Autocheck (but don't rely solely on those).

Have the dealer black out the prior owner(s) names on the DCS and send you the DCS (service, etc.) history in advance. If it checks out, offer $60k or just under and go from there.

Good luck.

Remember, you can buy this car new (as a 2013) for around 68K. To me, I would pay the extra 8k and get a new. Far less risky, too.

I'll PM you a link that might help.

$66k seems a little high.

I just test drove this car. It is in really good condition, no chips, clean underneath-looks new, etc. Get your offer in by month end, they seem motivated to take less than 66k

I wouldn't pay over $59-$60k for a 2011 used. As everyone said you can get a new 2013 for around $67,500 - $68,000 (very well equipped, it's about $70k loaded with every option).

Plus, since 2013's are hitting the shores now, 2011's are technically 2 model years behind. The prices on used 2012's are still the same as NEW 2013's.. I don't get it.

I still think $60k for a 2 model year old car is kind of high, but finding a 2011 M3 lower than that is nearly impossible. Best deal i've seen is a 2011 e92 w/ 8k miles fully loaded (literally everything), space grey on black, for $57,500. If I didn't hate black interiors so much and think gray on black is literally the most boring combo (no offense anyone) I would have bought it in a heart beat

a very well equipped m3 coupe is around 74k+ usually around 75.

OP, if you're interested in the 2011, don't go by the model year but the in service date. It determines your warranty end date. As for your 335i, I traded mine in to Carmax in White Marsh, MD yesterday for 22k :/ 08 335i, pretty loaded with only 44k miles with 2 days left of warranty

Thanks for your input - I would expect it to be in excellent shape with less than 7K miles! Can you comment on the mineral white color and how it compares to Alpine? Just curious if you're planning on purchasing it.

Carmax offered me $21K for mine about a month ago with 59,000 miles, but I was in need of an appraisal and not intending to sell. The dealer with the M3 coupe for sale gave me a ballpark number of $17K over the phone for trade. I would rather fly to the dealer than lose out on getting potentially another $3K from CarMax.

Mineral white is a 2 stage white with metallic flake that pops nicely in the sun. It's almost a pearl white, but a little more subtle. I prefer it over alpine white (I personally think all car colors look better with some pearl or metallic).

In reference to trade ins, Carmax is best right now. I've noticed dealers low balling the hell out of everyone lately. Like lowballs so low it's laughable. Hard times I guess

here's a pic I found for reference:

Thanks for the pics! Sterling BMW has a nicely equipped2013 Alpine White E92 on their lot which I'm considering taking a look at. I'm thinking I should go to my local delaer and at least look at both whites to get a feel for which I like better.

The only other color I'd be interested is SGM. I've been looking at used for several months. Now I'm starting to wonder if I should go for it and buy new.

Isn't the car in Wayne NJ? It's not that far of a drive, no need to fly. I have heard people getting an appraisal from Carmax first then going to the dealership to negotiate on the trade in AFTER settling on the price of the car. Only disadvantage here is that the nearest carmax from Wayne NJ is either in PA or MD.

I don't know about MD but certain states allow for a tax deduction on your trade in so that's potentially another $2000 for your trade.

[Edit] Sorry, just saw sterling bmw up there. lol

Not buying it, want it, but need an E90. Like others said, the mineral white really pops in the sun.

I saw that Alpine White over at Sterling. It's nice. White on black.

They are pretty anal about their prices though; Fairfax BMW seems to haggle better.

A used SGM e92 fully loaded just sold a few weeks back in PA for $57,500. It had 9000 miles. Not trying to rub it in =P
