Thought i was gonna get attacked by environmentalists

so i'm at a dinner party with mostly dudes and a couple of wives. the male conversation was interesting - didn't know everybody at the table but quickly realized it was a very liberal bunch and conversations ranged from health care, economy, parenting, golf, travel, etc. enjoyed much of the conversation until we started talking about the environment. this evolved into how cars are getting more efficient, etc. One dude complains that his honda ONLY gets 23MPG and another brags how he gets 32 MPG. I slowly want to climb under the table. i got 3 V8's in my garage (one being my E93) and i don't think i get 32 MPG's combined. I just wait it out ... until my buddy blurts out "hey D, you get like 13 MPG on a good day right?" - [i was like STFU!] dang. music stops and all eyes on me. I just laugh and hope it passes. now, don't care what people think about what i drive but i was on my 4th McCallen and feeling good, didn't want a buzz kill.

So obviously the environmental "ring leader" of this bunch asks me what i drive. I answer "just a little bimmer" - "oh, my little lexus gets 30 MPG - what kind of BMW?" - wanted to punch him in the nose - little self righteous prick.

ME: "m3"
HIM: "cool, who cares about MPG, you drive an M"

thought this group would enjoy that...

haha, happy ending! Thought this was going in a completely different direction.

I read this on the forum a while back and think it's a perfect response to the question "What MPG you get in that thing?". When someone asks that, reply "What do you think it gets?" and when they start to answer, interrupt them and say "WRONG!!! LESS!!!"

I'm glad it turned out the way it did. Judgmental pricks, holier than thou Templars have a hard time being zen about boundaries and peoples lives, I've found.

IMO mpg of cars is not the biggest problem with environment. It's really the emissions of factories and sure cars that effects things

Haha that's a funny story. Didn't see the ending coming.

I've got 2 cars, and they can't get 40 mpg both of them combined for sure.

As I tell people when the conversation turns to fuel economy:

My M3 passes everything -- but the gasoline station.

Good story. I try to find a balance in my life. I have xeriscaping (zero water landscaping) and am also about 95% vegetarian. Both offset and exceed the difference between my car and a high mpg hybrid or otherwise. Keep the "line" handy that you are vegetarian (heck, even if you aren't!) and note that that alone does more for CO2 emissions than the difference between a low and high mpg car! As a follow up then ask them how much meat they eat! I suppose you could even try that approach and not lie about being vegetarian. It just highlights that we all make choices along a spectrum and across a spectrum of topics.

As green as people get in super liberal San Francisco, most people here care less about what kind of car you drive. I often joke about the bad MPG I get and we share a few laughs.

I really doubt anyone would find it offensive that you drive a gas chugging car. It's your pocketbook after all!

Since global warming is made up and carbon emissions don't actually negatively effect the environment, it seems like a really boring conversation.

I was at the Pittsburgh International Auto Show this past weekend, and there were a couple cars modified to burn natural gas including a new 5.0 liter Mustang. This is the way to go to achieve energy independence in my opinion, but its not going to effect the weather.

Agree....it takes many many many cars to equal the emissions output of a single powerplant. And China is commissioning something like one powerplant a fortnight, mainly coal-fired too.

Of course they are both factors, but it's society's addiction to electricity rather than combustion engines that is really hurting environmentally.

Tell them you kill endagered animals for fun on the weekends. I've never had what I drive or mpg be any kind of issue that stfu wouldn't handle.

They charge for bags in the San Francisco area. It's to reduce plastic waste. We all use re-usable bags most of the time now. Not such a bad thing.

My fiance is turning me into an environmental prick.

Next thing you know I'll be in a prius. I must stop it right now. I'm buying plastic bags from now on.

Nice story. My other car's a Subi so, on average, I get over 20mpg. That's what I tell others...

I'm curious how much of this is true regarding plastic bags. http://www.plasticsindustry.org/file...rocerybags.pdf
