Per Motul's VP or marketing:

"The advantages of the Racing 300 V, is again, the film that the ester puts down and prevents metal to metal contact. A second advantage in the 300 V series is that the ester has four to five times the film strength and the tensile strength. It is more of an insurance policy."

I've also heard about race engines that run 300V being opened up and all the parts are impregnated with this film.

Sounds to me that it might be a good idea to run a few cycles of Motul 300V to get the bearing impregnated with this film to prevent further wear... then later just run Motul Xcess 8100 daily and 300V when I have several back to back track days
Impregnating parts with an ester film is a myth! As for the 300V, there is no doubt that it is a good oil but is is not as much better than the Mobil 1 0W40 than the price suggests. Take a look at the oem's that spec the 0W40 for use in their engines, it is a pretty impressive list....... Porsche (all models including the GT3/GT3RS), MB (all AMG cars), Nissan (GTR), VW/Audi (Numerous models including the R8 V10), Chrysler (all the SRT models........ And there are still more!

Don't worry the S65 is not an engine that puts super high demands on engine oil as we have seen from UOA's. Use the 0W40 with confidence, it really is a great oil!

does it fit the new bmw criteria for oils that are allowed though? wouldn't want them to deny warranty because it didn't fit in one of the three options allowed.

Excess 8100 fits the criteria however 300V exceeds criteria

Has pretty much the same levels as TWS, and slightly less than Shell Rotella T6 5W40. But for those concerned about the warranty, T6 and Motul don't have the LL01 sticker on the bottle.

HAHAHA. I wondered when somebody would catch that. I bought the bottle to celebrate my first grandchild's birth (due any day now). I plan to let it age until her High School graduation.

Back on topic.

I'm still curious about this oil change announcement. I've listed to both sides debating it, and I'm still convinced BMW is specifically talking about the S65/S85 with the lighter oil. I haven't seen anything yet that would convince me otherwise. I could get deep into the grammar of the announcement, and it still would mean S65/S85 == lighter oil. Otherwise the announcement would have been worded much differently.

Motul says it on the website for both excess 8100 0w40 and 5w40

Here's a link to the 5w40 data sheet.

http://www.motul.com/system/product_..._X-cess_5W-40_" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://www.motul.com...ess_5W-40_</a>" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://<a href="http...5W-40_</a></a>(GB).pdf?1375200241

(For some reason my iphone won't post the whole link... So just look on motuls website)

For some reason for the 0w40 it says it on the website but not the data sheet.

For the 300V all it says that it exceeds all Motorsport standards

Seems strange when back in the days when S54s running 5w30 were spitting rod bearings out, BMW almost cured the problem with new shells and the freshly developed 10w60tws.

Surely going back to 5w30 is a retrograde step.

We have no such 5w30 recommendation in Europe except for using it to top up with in emergency.

They solved the problem with additional clearance, not the 10W60. The TWS has been around for years albeit under different names. I have spoken to Doug Hillary, one of the original engineers/tribiologists who worked on the development of TWS, you can find him on www.bobistheoilguy.com if you are interested.

if M1 0W40 is not fancy enough for y'all, and you have to have ester in your oil, then go with Motul x-cess 5W40 (easily found on Amazon.com). It has higher HTHS than the 0W40 version, both are BMW LL-01 oils.

A lot of very good 5w-40s available. If you're not worried about LL-01 ratings, then you really can't go wrong with shell rotella T6 5w-40.

Bargain priced and readily available, the rotella T6 also has a HTHS of ~4.0 which I believe is higher than all the other oils mentioned in this thread save the 300v and TWS.

Everything stated here is true, Doug helped design that oil many many years ago. It has had certain minor changes over the years but the over all oil is still exactly the same. Only the dealership oil is the same ester as the original. The new Edge Professional 10-60 is not the same oil.

My E92 M3 was $180K

My E36 Evo M3 was $146K, and that was in 1996.

We pay triple US price on everything that BMW sells.

Importing oil 1L at a time saves me almost half though.

ok, I'm reading this thread and way too many "you could" and "perhaps" type of answers.

Let me see if I can get a straight YES/NO answer:

for a car that lives in hot humid weather like south Florida, and does occasional tracking of late, would the following work:

- Mobil 1 5w-40 ?

It's not inflation. The AUD is worth only 5 to 10 cents less than the USD as was on above par for a while.

Car prices are high because our government wants them to be: in order to protect local car firms from competition.

If you are set on using something different I would only use the 0-40, it is approved. The 5-40 is not any thicker and if you are talking of the ESP oil then it is inferior in quality to the 0-40.

Mobil 1 0W-40
@ 40º C 75
@ 100º C 13.5
Viscosity Index 185

The 0-40 is superior in that because the VI is higher it will not break down as fast. Relative to the other two oils below there is no point in running them. If there were no other option the diesel would be fine but that is no the case.
Diesel 1250 for zinc and 1130 for phos
0-40 1100 and 1000
The 1100-1000 is plenty high enough

I'd search for a VOA for the 0w vs the 5w. They do look similar, I'm just not sure if the diesel oil has less moly, zinc or phosphorus. Here are two details from the Mobil 1 site.

The Mobil 1TurboDiesel 5w40 has high amounts of zinc/phosphorus. I ran that in my 335 for a few changes but lost some power due to the extra weight.

Good to see you on this board!!
I'm really surprised it's thick enough you lost power with it.

I thought the standard 5W30 was already a pretty thick oil for it's rating.
Looks like the diesel oil is eve thicker.

I probably made that comment out of context but as a driver of why cars are expensive agreed there are hefty import duties as opposed to inflation as such. Clearly protection of the local car firms (Holden & Ford) hasn't been extremely successful even with government protection.

As a general statement inflation in Australia has been prevalent there can be no doubting that, I don't recall a loaf of bread from Coles costing anywhere near $4 8 years ago when I left Melbourne.
