Don't worry the S65 is not an engine that puts super high demands on engine oil as we have seen from UOA's. Use the 0W40 with confidence, it really is a great oil! |

Has pretty much the same levels as TWS, and slightly less than Shell Rotella T6 5W40. But for those concerned about the warranty, T6 and Motul don't have the LL01 sticker on the bottle.

HAHAHA. I wondered when somebody would catch that. I bought the bottle to celebrate my first grandchild's birth (due any day now). I plan to let it age until her High School graduation.
Back on topic. I'm still curious about this oil change announcement. I've listed to both sides debating it, and I'm still convinced BMW is specifically talking about the S65/S85 with the lighter oil. I haven't seen anything yet that would convince me otherwise. I could get deep into the grammar of the announcement, and it still would mean S65/S85 == lighter oil. Otherwise the announcement would have been worded much differently. |

Here's a link to the 5w40 data sheet. http://www.motul.com/system/product_..._X-cess_5W-40_" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://www.motul.com...ess_5W-40_</a>" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://<a href="http...5W-40_</a></a>(GB).pdf?1375200241 (For some reason my iphone won't post the whole link... So just look on motuls website) For some reason for the 0w40 it says it on the website but not the data sheet. For the 300V all it says that it exceeds all Motorsport standards |

Seems strange when back in the days when S54s running 5w30 were spitting rod bearings out, BMW almost cured the problem with new shells and the freshly developed 10w60tws.
Surely going back to 5w30 is a retrograde step. We have no such 5w30 recommendation in Europe except for using it to top up with in emergency. |

if M1 0W40 is not fancy enough for y'all, and you have to have ester in your oil, then go with Motul x-cess 5W40 (easily found on Amazon.com). It has higher HTHS than the 0W40 version, both are BMW LL-01 oils.

A lot of very good 5w-40s available. If you're not worried about LL-01 ratings, then you really can't go wrong with shell rotella T6 5w-40.
Bargain priced and readily available, the rotella T6 also has a HTHS of ~4.0 which I believe is higher than all the other oils mentioned in this thread save the 300v and TWS. |

My E92 M3 was $180K
My E36 Evo M3 was $146K, and that was in 1996. We pay triple US price on everything that BMW sells. Importing oil 1L at a time saves me almost half though.

ok, I'm reading this thread and way too many "you could" and "perhaps" type of answers.
Let me see if I can get a straight YES/NO answer: for a car that lives in hot humid weather like south Florida, and does occasional tracking of late, would the following work: - Mobil 1 5w-40 ?

Mobil 1 0W-40 @ 40º C 75 @ 100º C 13.5 Viscosity Index 185 The 0-40 is superior in that because the VI is higher it will not break down as fast. Relative to the other two oils below there is no point in running them. If there were no other option the diesel would be fine but that is no the case. Diesel 1250 for zinc and 1130 for phos 0-40 1100 and 1000 The 1100-1000 is plenty high enough

The Mobil 1TurboDiesel 5w40 has high amounts of zinc/phosphorus. I ran that in my 335 for a few changes but lost some power due to the extra weight.

I'm really surprised it's thick enough you lost power with it. I thought the standard 5W30 was already a pretty thick oil for it's rating. Looks like the diesel oil is eve thicker. .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

As a general statement inflation in Australia has been prevalent there can be no doubting that, I don't recall a loaf of bread from Coles costing anywhere near $4 8 years ago when I left Melbourne.
