Hi MANZ UK,
As the title suggests I'm just down the road from you. It's been interesting reading this past couple of months,as peoples heart rates speed-up.
I agree that keeping the secret was great, way back when my dad yous't to take me to Earls Court in the late '50s. But as theres no chance that i'll be at Geneva,it's not so important to keep the surprise (for me that is). Though i do acknowlege BMW's train of thought.

Mike.

4 wheel drive!!

From the BMW press release:

Innovation: new models with the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive
system.
The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system is on the advance.
The number of models benefiting from permanent and variable power
distribution to front and rear wheels, providing them not only with a clear
traction advantage but also giving them more driving dynamics,
continues to rise. The optimised networking of the computing units of
DSC and xDrive permits an even more precise response to changes in
driving conditions. The BMW X5 and BMW X3 come with xDrive as
standard equipment. The system is also available as an option for the
BMW 5 Series and for the Saloon, the Touring and, for the first, for the
BMW 3 Series Coupé.

Could we see some 4 wheel drive action on the new M3?? May be needed to maintain a competitive advantage over the RS4.

Nein - Four wheel drive is weight and we dont do weight!

Because it is not part of the M-Division philosophy. There will at first only be one four wheel drive M model and it it something that will enhance the aesthetics of a SAV with a switchable four wheel drive system through flex-ray technology .
whilst this system is only being developed to be used in the upcoming BMW X6SAC Which in after 1 year and a half be introduced as an M-model.
The BMW X6 SAC is the reason why there will not be an M-badged X5 - It's not that type of car .

Just as BMW and M-Division stress that four wheel drive in their road cars will never happen. Because they want you to enjoy driving them.

I'd quite like a garage containing an M3 and an M6-X or MX-6 (nah that wouldn't work...)

If it isn't going to be an option on the M3 then it probably will be on the 335i, which will further close the gap between the 2 in a straight line. Are we hearing opinions here or do we have forum members who are on the M3 design team? With respect to all I would like to know what qualifies anyone to cite M division philosophy and how they know the philosophy hasn't developed/progressed with the new M3. Who's to say we wouldn't enjoy driving an M3 with switchable 4 wheel drive?

There have been several interviews with Ulrick Brunche (ex-head of M division) plus other senior BMW representatives that have clearly stated their design criteria. Sometimes when you ask BMW representatives a direct question they become all cagey (implying there might be a possibility), but whenever they have been asked about 4WD, turbocharging or in fact the possibility of an M-division SUV the answers have allways been emphatically NO!

M GmbH are also allowed a good deal of latitute to go their own way (against other BMW practices) such as removal of run-flats on the M5/M6s and they are clearly tasked with creating the best 'drivers cars' within the BMW range.

We won't see the M3 in Geneva, the best we might get is a teaser of what it might be.

+1

... thinking the same thing. I think BMW made a mistake bringing in the 335 ... cause now the M3 has to be much faster than the 335 to make financial sense for anyone to buy the M3 and at the same it cant be quicker than an M6 ... imagine the poor guy that bought his super duper expensive M6 and along come the E9x M3 spanking its a$$

The concept M3 will be at Geneva. It's only missing from the press release to keep people guessing.

From an overall displacement around 4.0 liters, it is said to deliver an Audi RS4-equaling 420 hp. This represents a 77-hp increase over the old M3 and 114 hp more than the critically acclaimed twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter 335i.

Great math!

Assuming 420, I show 87hp increase over the old M3, and 120 over the current twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter 335i. No?

They calculate with European figures; M3 E46 in Europe has 343 HP, 335i E9X has 306 HP................ So in the end all things match perfectly

Yes and no. Euro M3 is 343 HP, Euro 335 306HP. So +77 and +114 is right for Europe. Your numbers anyway are right for the US.

Best regards, south

EDIT: You're to fast, Romo

Agreed. BMW would not have been so keen to invite some of my journalist buddies if there was nothing to see..
