It's mainly used for drifting. You weld the spider gears so the wheels are pretty much locked together so they always spin at the same speed and with the same amount of torque. Google "welded diff rain" and you'll find an encyclopedia of horror stories.

A lot of track cars run welded diffs, even a factory backed Porsche race car baxk in the day. Welded > LSD for drifting (I'm talking about drift events, not your typical high school punk who likes to power over u-turns)
