At first, I was wondering why you would say that, then I realized my name change went through. Still waiting for them to change it on E46....

Well, apparently they've already changed the team name, but it's the US F1 team based in NC.

I just noticed this same issue last night. I thought it was a rock pinging against the brake shield.

I had this issue 2 weeks ago while I was attending a car control clinic. I asked the instructors and they thought I got a rock caught in the car. I tried backing up to clear it and that did not work. The sound comes during idle and at low speeds only. I took it to the dealer and of course they could not find anything wrong with the car and the sound went away while at the shop. They said all exhaust connections were good too. It sounds like something metallic is hitting another metal part in the left rear section. It went away for a while then came back on the other night. I'm still clueless as to the cause.

LSD...really?? The sound is like an empty soup can dragging on the street. Next I'm gonna write "just married" accross the back window.

It did go away after about 20 min. I have never heard anything like it.

I checked under the car and started tapping on the different components with another metallic object and the closest duplication of the sound I got was from the exhaust can.

I had the same thing happen to me. It only happened once when I backed into the driveway after driving. Although it did not make noise going forward, as I was testing and trying to figure out where it is coming from. The car has been parked ever since, been two weeks. So never got around to see if it will happen again. We'll see!!!!

I totally had this happen, too. Before it happened to me I thought it was caused by something caught on a brake rotor. Now I don't think so. But that dragging sound drives me insane. It's been a while since it happened, but now I realize this is the same thing as described in this thread.

I'm 99% sure it's not the differential. But I have no idea what it could be.

Me too. This weird pinging noise, like a dragging empty tin can, happens occasionally while reversing. It comes and goes as it pleases. Pretty embarassing, extremely annoying. I was, however, able to reproduce the sound by tapping the brake shield. Must be the rock theory?
Question to all experiencing this, are your cars lowered? Mine is.

Now this might be a little OT, you can skip this if you don't want to read. After turning off the car, there are very light taping noise coming off from the front wheel wells, sounds like tap the rotor with screw driver. But what really gets me worried is that every time after about 30mins, there is a very big popping noise from the right side, sounds like hitting the plastic fender from the inside, anybody know what this might be?
I have experienced these exact same symptoms with my car occasionally since it picked it up in the summer of 2008. Never had it investigated but no control messages have ever come up, nor has the car's performance ever suffered. Given that this appears to be very common with no apparent ill-effects, I assume it is normal and non-problematic.

I was about to reply that I too have heard this noise and to my shock there were a lot of replies. I left my car parked for a week and when I came back, I was pulling it out of the garage and heard the same noise. To me, it sounded like metal expanding. I assumed it was the cold garage + heat outside + engine and brakes not used for a week = sound.
I inspected the car and everything seemed normal and good to go.

I just heard this tonight. It's like dragging newly wed soup cans; comes from the rear (sounds like the brakes) and goes away. Happens very rarely and a heatup from a cold start after several days seems to be the common theme. Oh well.

I to have fallen victim to pining tin can noise from the rear. I really don't see how it could be a rock because I drove it saturday it was fine, let it sit sunday, and all of a sudden a rock finds itself into my rear brake on monday? I'm going to take it into the dealer and see what they say, plus I'm going to badger them about that low speed full lock turn noise I keep getting. If anything I'll come out of the dealer with a washed car.
