6MT software update question
I understand, given the technology in this car, that software updates are a reality. However, i get the impression that they are more common on DCT models? How often can i expect to have my software updated on my 6MT?
I ask because I am considering CIC nav retrofit and was told by the vendor that i would have to remove it every time i have a software update. Once a year, I could live with, but if it's more than that, it would a PITA and I would forego this mod... Thanks.

I have had my car for over two years with a 6MT. I heard that the new update makes for smoother cold starts and tried to get my dealer to update the software. They kept the car overnight and could not reproduce the issue and did not reflash. I was not surprised because it was not cold enough to recreate the problem.
In other words, I don't think they will update unless there is problem. I heard the newest software makes it harder to code but that may just be a rumor.

Anyone know of easy access to a running list of all software updates and what the update is supposed to achieve? That would be nice to know.

I don't think it's a rumor. I purchased my car (2008 M3 6MT) CPOed in July of 2010 and it had a newer version of the software on the car. When Powerchip was here trying to flash my car, they said it had a new BMW/factory tunerlock on it. They had some trouble getting past it, but they did successfully in the end.

Yes, but i thought these updates were for more things than just the tranny. Could be for a variety for reasons as far as I know...

Jun '08 car here, and never an update. With the horror stories I've read over the years, no way I'd agree to one unless absolutely necessary. Good luck.

I have a early 08 dct and just had the update in Feb/11. My car performs much better in stop and go traffic after the update. It doesn't seem to get confused at 5 mph rolling stops anymore. It bogged before, when you got back on the gas.
The car is adaptive in shifting now. When I've been slogging around Atlanta, with no chance of being able to accelerate briskly, it's changed the shifting urgency and it's rewarded me with 17.1 mpg. Before you tell me "your not driving it hard enough" piss off. It's jammed street traffic. Georgetown, Santa Monica, Central Park East, Buckhead Atlanta. No one could have fun. In these conditions the car is better. Not as lively but that's only a button away. Before the update it drove horribly. I would love to drive elp_jc's just to know what it originally felt like. I'm sure my car's had two updates and the second is much better than the first but was the first update to tone it down? elp_jc have you driven different software version's and compared and if you have what did you find? Is the original software the best? |

Problem with updates over the years varied from system crapping out and leaving car disabled, missing features, cars drove worse than before, electronic glitches, etc, etc. But if you have DCT and have the lag, that would qualify as 'no other choice'. Take care. |
