Just Kidding, I want to post some photos of an MTU 4000 series engine that we had to pull apart today. It had the flange broken off of one of the liners so I thought it would be a great chance to show you guys some photos of the engines I work on.

MTU is a German engine manufacturer that makes large diesel and natural gas engines for marine, rail, power generation, gas compression, and mining applications. Detroit Diesel (originally GM Diesel and famous for the 2 stroke diesel engines of yesteryear AKA "screaming jimmy") and MTU merged in the year 2000 and are now known as Tognum AG who markets large displacement engines under the MTU name. The 4000 in the 4000 series refers to the displacement, more precisely 4000 cc's or 4 Litres per cylinder (4060 cc's to be precise), yes, the displacement of one cylinder is roughly equal to our beloved S65. The engine/parts that are pictured are from a V16 4000 series with a total displacement of 65 Litres and approximately 2300 HP at around 1900 RPM. The MTU series 4000 16V in the photos is a high pressure common rail injection diesel, twin-cam, quad-turbocharged, 4 valve per cylinder, liquid to air after cooled engine with a one piece crank with bolted on counterweights, and individual cylinder heads.

I hope you enjoy the photos:

Here is a bonus photo of a big radiator and the truck it is going on....... for those of you that have mentioned before that it was impossible to cool an SC'ed S65 on the track, here is a rad that cools a 3600 HP engine that travels 40 MPH as it's all out max speed........ and the majority of the use the engine gets is under 100% load at max RPM. Remember, it is all about total cooling area!!!

Hope you guys enjoy the photos!!!

EDIT: New photos

New cylinder head (valvetrain side)

New cylinder head with gaskets, o-rings, bearing, injector, fire ring, and carbon scraper

New cylinder head with gaskets, o-rings, bearing, injector, fire ring, and carbon scraper (from different angle)

New cylinder head (combution chamber side)

Intake ports

New Piston and rod assembly complete with fasteners and bearing

Piston crown

Piston and wristpin (with tape measure to show size)

Fasteners, engine breathers, pushrods and clamps

Main bearing cap

Main bearing cap

New cylinder liner (already installed in block)

Turbos, exhaust manifolds and exhaust piping (notice how the exhaust pipes criss cross from both banks to feed the turbos evenly......... BMW wasn't the first to think of a cross bank manifold set-up but were probably the first to use it for automotive)

Oil pan (about 8' long x 3' wide x 1.5' deep and holds about 60 gallons)

You definitely need big valves to feed cylinders that are 4 litres of displacement!!!

COOL!!! I over those huge trucks. There is a huge pit mine between where I live and Dusseldorf and they have those huge 5 story tall dump trucks and huge scooper shovel things. I think I got interested in those huge dump trucks when I used to ride my Tonka truck down the driveway when I was a kid (the real metal ones, not cheap plastic ones they make now).

Thanks for sharing.

65 Liters!! I'm sure we'd only need to chop a little bit of your firewall to fit that engine in your E90. See you next spring for the swap?

Thanks for sharing, that is some seriously cool stuff. Do my eyes deceive me, or is that wrist pin retaining circlip nearly the size of the S65 bore?

I dig this stuff. I have an EMD for main propulsion on my boat and its interesting to see it come apart at in-frame even though I've seen it many times.

I wanted one like a year ago so they must have made one.

I had a read this isn't a bolt in one but they would be able to do it

HAHA...I got so excited when I saw the thread title.

Very cool photos. It's missing an Akrapovic Exhaust and some supercharger kit though....Do you have any 6-13mph times too?
