Like I said...there are clues. The very first indication is the Driver's meeting. That really sums up what the organizer values and how well prepared they are. I'm willing to bet that the drivers meeting at this event was a sh1tshow.

Drivers seem to think running a track event is easy. It's not.
Conjecture right now but I read on another thread that the Drivers meeting was actually good. Also read that it was the last session of the day and that the driver was a first timer.

Yeah, no idea...just a theory at this point. But what defines a good driver's meeting? First...are all of the drivers there and what happens to drivers that miss the meeting? You best be sure the FIRST thing I do is find where my student is parked during the driver's meeting. If the student is there messing with the car then we're going to have a driver's meeting at the grid as the others are going out. I do ask questions to see if they were at the meeting.

Fortunately, the DE org that I normally instruct with is pretty strict about attending the meeting and I've never ran into this issue.

Wow, hate to read/hear this type of news. We all do it knowing certain risks, but someone losing their life is beyond what any of us think about. My condolences to the instructors family and loved ones.

I believe it was a Pontiac GTO - a lot of car for a novice. [Although I turned up in 400 HP M3!]

From chats I've had, an instructor's worst fear is a 22-y-o novice turning up in a bright green Camaro SS for his first track day. More so when his buddy in a bright yellow Camaro SS is there too! There's a veritable sprint to the cars in the cold pits to not be the last one there!

I am really strong with my students when having our pre-track conversation.

I tell them in so many words that 'even though your hands are on the wheel, feet on the pedals & ass is in the driver's seat, *I* am in control of this vehicle.'
I've not had anyone challenge that--yet...

How can a car get into 'trees' at a track? Are there not barriers? I've never been to a track where you can get in the trees. RIP

There apparently are lots of tracks (particularly at North and NorthEast of US) with lots of trees & walls at close proximity to the track surfaces and very little run-off's.

We at SoCal are so fortunate in that sense.

Wonder if rollcage would've protected the passenger from that kind of side-impact...

Maybe, but if no hans was on, basal fracture...

What a tragedy for guy's family & friends.

My understanding is a HANS has relatively poor side impact protection...its a weakness compared to other like devices.
