What are the M3's issues

So, I went from a E46M3 to a CTS-V to a C6Z06 and now I'm headed to an E92M3. It's complicated, but there's a reason for each car. In any event, I'd like to purchase with eyes wide open. What are the current issues, complaints or things to watch out of when picking up a used M3 with about 20k miles on it. I'll be getting the a DCT because I can't operate a clutch anymore. (trust me, I'd get a MT if I could)

Thanks guys,

Some guy on the forum had his DCT fail on him, but he was the 2nd owner (i.e. abuse). I think the air idle valve is an issue on the car as well. Others can chime in...

39xxx miles and no probs 4-2008 production date, however I would love for someone to chime in that has 50K plus miles, oil leaks, cooling system issues, etc, I do oil changes every 8K miles too that might help longevity

So far no problems with mine (14k miles). However, I have noted that the paint is incredibly soft. My m3 at 14k miles has more rock chips than my 04 mercedes (nano clear) has at 90k miles.

Have others reported issues with the DCT? My E46 was an SMG and I never had one issue with it, but it was widely reported as an expensive failure once it went, especially when you were out of warrantee. Seemed to happen often enough for people to be pissed about it initially.

Previous 3ers were notorious for coolant system problems at 75,000-ish kms and RTABS, control arms, etc. Not sure if this will be a problem yet for the e92 M3s. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see suspension related issues being some of the first.

So, I've been doing some reading and evidently the fuel pump is an issue?

My 2011.5 with 16k miles has bad bearings and are getting replaced (along with a new crankshaft). I was told that another M3 was in service for the same issue as mine. I know there's been a few others on this forum with the same issue.

Drinks lots of gas... that's my #1 issue with it. Drink holders suck and can get jammed/broken. The arm that extends the seatbelt on the E92 will probably break at some point... No friggin dip stick to tell where the oil level is really at.

These are all common issue with the E90..
and the cap to my experience will not break so easily.
Neither the seatbealt. (but it looks kind of cheap though)
No Bimmer has a dipstick anymore...so this brings us to the level of
deciding which brand car you want to buy?

Coming from E90 and E60 I Can tell you the M3 is the most robust car BMW has to offer--hands down..

Don't think the M3 has the fuel pump issue, as the engine is old-school port injected--not hard on the fuel pump. From what I can tell, the direct-injected 335 has had issues with its high pressure fuel pump (HPFP). Perhaps that is what you read about. Direct injection requires much more of a fuel pump.

The only consistent complaint I'm aware of is the idle control valve, which should have already gone bad by 20K if it were going to.

The brake sucks, it doesn't feel like a performance car with those shitty brakes. Maybe i had big break kit on my previous car, so i am sensitive to shitty brakes.

Car interior makes squeaking noise. My fender, hood, and front bumper doesn't align perfectly, and dealership can't fix it.

Best bet always is if you purchase a used one ... have it checked out at a BMW dealership. Then use this report to agree on the best price or have the seller fix the issues.

When I sold my 2002 e46 m3 with around 96K KM my BMW dealer found a broken driver side rear spring, I had it replaced then got my asking price of $25K.

2008 E90 M3 with 57k miles with EDC, no issues as of yet. And I go through my setting plenty during any drive. Always amaze with the difference from comfort to sport.

That's the HPFP issue known on the 335i, and not the ///M cars
