The shims I've seen are actually inserted into the spring itself, preventing it from compressing.

No white donut. You are good to go sir.

And it does *not* raise ride height. The stupid donut just sits in between the springs. Prevents *compression* of the spring.

God help me if I read another post saying these things jack up the car.

I had the same when I bought my Golf GTi, drove home from the dealers 200 miles and thought things were a bit firm, after jacking the car up I found them on the front, so phoned the dealer who crapped themselves, I got the price of two new front tyres refunded to me.

That's my car, but it was when it rolled off of the truck at the dealer before it was even delivered to me. Car had 5 miles on it total. The front was ABSOLUTELY higher than after they took the blocks out. Maybe the OP's car wasn't so high because he put 18k miles on it.
