How loud are exhaust systems in person? Will I anger my neighbors?

Hello

I am very seriously considering picking up an M3 from a member on the forum, and I would like to get an aftermarket exhaust at some point. I live in a complex that includes attached garages, and I have a 2 car garage that sits directly below the living room of the unit above. If I got a Gintani or AA, would starting and idling the car be too loud for the unit above? I know that when I stay at my parent's house, my dad's Z06 with stock exhaust (butterfly valve fuse removed) can be heard and felt throughout the entire place (stone and 2x6 construction with sound insulation in every wall)... so I can only imagine what a loud car would sound like through one apartment floor.

Input and or experiences would be appreciated.

This is like taking candy from a baby...

YES, you will certainly piss the neighbors off if you get a Gintani or AA aftermarket exhaust.

Where you located in the Midwest? Maybe you can meet up with someone who has an exhaust so you can hear it.

But typically, YES your neighbors above will hear it even if you went with one of the quietest exhaust systems. Mainly because on a cold start it tends to be noticeable. Depending on the building they might even hear your stock M3 as well.

Talk to them, maybe they wouldnt care. My across the street neighbor hears me every morning but says he doesnt mind. He used to have a built up mustang before.

I suppose I am more Great Lakes than midwest, but I live in North Western Ohio. If there is anyone within an hour or two, I wouldnt mind taking a drive out to hear it.

The loudest part is when you cold start the car. It's very lean and idles at around 1500rpm for about 30 seconds. After a minute or two it quiets down, but that first part is fairly loud.

I have this mutha fucka that delivers some shit (newspapers or something) at 5-6 am...seems like weekends. Anyways, this piece of shit wakes me up all the time with his loud ass exhaust on his POS car. On top of this, his god damn brakes squeal. I hear him cruisin through the entire neighborhood and since he constantly stops and goes, he makes a lot of noise. I hope he burns.

that sucks for you, should have posted sooner, I've come back from Ohio (Oxford Miami)
about three times this year with 3 different exhaust setups each time.

So you could've heard your fair share of axle back and full cats/resonator cut out systems

even with the stock exhaust, cold starts are pretty loud.... right now i have a bastuck exhaust which is one of the quietest exhausts around... prob something like eisen sport... anyway even on a cold start, the exhaust is still loud and it echoes throughout my entire underground garage.

I don't know what they disabled or why the car does it, but I am glad it doesn't do it anymore. As to the original poster, forget your neighbors. They will get used to it. As long as you keep the stock midpipes and cats you should be fine.
