Brake tap routine didn't work for me. I'll have to try again. No one in the car with me will think it's odd or anything.

Since then I've heard it on a dozen M3s minimum, including both of mine. My 6MT since 14k miles when I acquired (has almost 50k now), and my DCT with 25k mls. Heard many times in person, and in random cold start M3 videos on YouTube.

Malek @ MRF's explanation here http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...7&postcount=20

Also briefly exchanged with Mike Benvo on the issue. Through his remote tuning he's heard it on numerous occasions on M3s around the world.

So it's either a very widespread problem, or it's normal. I lean toward the latter.
Thanks for the link.
Mine does not do that, but good to know for future reference.

The sound is not M3 specific.
I have the same metallic Clunck noise for a few years on my........ 325i E92 6mt.

look here on a 328I http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=827528

The noise is coming from under the car. I was thinking is the flywheel but looks like the DCT guys have it also.

What is left is the starting motor explanation.

My car has sat for close to a week and it doesn't make that sound ever. I do have a low mileage '13 and ESS tuned....but I can't say that sound is normal.

It's not the starter motor, and not the flywheel ! In this thread the motor starter was replaced and was no fix ! ( ///M3 )
We are thinking it's the Vanos Gears !
Here everything about the clunck noise > http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=996069

When i drive my car every day there is no clunk noise ,or when i take her out for a longer trip 100-150 Miles the clunk noise is gone for 2-3 weeks !
So i think our cars need to be driven often and longer trips !
Here is a video it's "not" my car ,but here the clunk noise is "very loud" !
This sound....sounds very bad,and can not be good for our engine
I have about 50 % loudness of the noise in the video !
There are a lot of people with this problem !
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=448577
So in the video is the clunk noise very clear and loud........and hope that we can find a solution for this problem !

A buddy of mine was here yesterday who is a mechanic. Not a BMW mechanic but a good one just the same.

He said it sounds like the slack coming out of the timing chains on start up.

Do the tensioner's rely on oil pressure at all?

Replacing the tensioners is no fix for the clunck noise ,we saw that on here by a member ,he had the tensioners replaced and the noise was still there !
The only and single fix that I saw was replacing the "Vanos Gears" but it's $$$$.
Thread of 11 pages about the clunck noise => http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=996069
For now the only thing that helps is the brake procedure but works only for DCT.
