M3 lease rates (money factor and residuals) came out today

Damn, I just ran some lease numbers on an M5. I found an '08 M5 for 13k under MSRP, so if we plug that in with BMWFN numbers, a 24 month lease, 12k miles a year, comes to 1040 a month with 7% tax in the payments, and a 36 month lease comes to 1160 a month with 7% tax in the payment. Which is a lot better than the M3 numbers.

All you guys arguing against leases can say that these people are living well outside their means, only on a much larger scale. Now, my friend's father recently had a stroke. Maybe it was because of always living on a razor's edge financially, but assuming it wasn't because of that, do you think he cares about practical investment strategies? He's obviously more concerned with enjoying his life while he's still around.

Yes life is short, and money should be used to improve the quality of life, but home equity lines of credit and 6 year notes on a car are good indications that some people really ought to look elsewhere. I don't think the credit crunch is hardly caused by consumers "leasing" thier cars. It is probably much more attributable to the housing market bubble bursting.

Buggers! For my car, I get $1,378/month. I figure I could negotiate that down to $1,299/month. That's still $250/month more than I wanted to spend. And guys, isn't the money factor really .00305? The dealer I'm probably going to go with said their standard markup is .0005. So .00275 plus the .0005 markup is .00305. Is no one else getting markup like this?

Did you just really post that response? I am saying this is because the M3 is a GUAREENTED depreciating asset. How can you compare buying a home that is also tax deductible to buying a M3 which will no doubt lose value? At least with the home it’s a home and the chances of and % of depreciation is less.

Here's what I'm struggling with--if I can get an M5 for similar lease payments--I would be tempted to switch--certainly more reasonable for me with 2 kids. Jimmyz--how easy was it to get the dealers down 13k?

I guess you have to find a dealer that has had the car on the lot for a while... I called the dealership who advertised 13k off MSRP, and they said that all three of those cars sold (they were '08 cars). They have a new one it, but it just came in, so they are not willing to do such a deep discount. He said if the car doesn't sell for 2 months, he would give me a call, and maybe he could give me at least somewhere close to 13k off list. So, basically, if you call around, especially to dealers in the middle of nowhere, you may find someone with an M5 who simply wants to get rid of it.

That's pure speculation. Nobody knows where the housing market is going. Sure the M3 will surely depreciate, but at a predictable rate. How much money will you really lose by owning an M3 for 4 years? $30k maybe (less considering you pretty much have to own a car one way or another). How much money can you loose by buying a $750k house if the market continues to tank? In the six digits. Plus, you are completely missing the point that buying a car is not an investment. For a young person who thinks he/she can earn a solid income in a 5-7 years, saving $20-$30 by buying a cheaper car is irrelevant. If you don't think you'll be making good money in the future, then that's another story.

Could you tell me where you found this deal? My dealer won't go anywhere near this amount off the MSRP. Specifically the dealership, I just want to use it as fodder to talk down my dealer. Thanks.

We are getting way off topic, but its not really $13k off MSRP. The program for last month and one that was discontinued for March. The reduction is taken as a down payment not a cap reduction which has an effect on the payment.

I did the following #'s on a FULLY LOADED M5 with MSRP of $99,755...everything on this bad boy.

You are looking at now (March) if you put $330 down and have drive offs of $2500 (first month, title registration) I get a payment of $1369 on 24 month 10k mile a year and that is $1k over invoice. For every $1k down it reduces payment by roughly $35

*this is with leasing in Cali, I have heard that NYC and TX have different lease parameters)

No matter what, it is still very, very close to the M3 #'s and the real question is do you want a 3 series or a 5 series for the same payment.

Thats a little too much I'd rather have an M5 M6 anyday at those same numbers I really don't care that much about the M3 as is and the fact is in this whole thread everyone forgot to mention that the numbers quoted aren't including the likely $5-15k markup.

Um, no... you are talking about some lease deal, I am talking about a BMW dealership who had 3 new 2008 M5s in stock, and offered between 12 and 13k off MSRP on all of them.
