Thumbs up Check out my new tool!...It spreads things!

First off...shame on you for wanting to see my tool!

http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-29100-Qu...e+pad+spreader

~$55 from amazon.com...got this nifty multi piston pad spreader. No more using old brake pads or prybars to push those pesky pistons back. No more getting your sausage fingers stuck in your nice stoptechs and then having to yell your friends to bring some lube! I also think many women may be vaguely familiar with this tool as well which could intrigue the opposite sex (or the same sex if you're a woman). Its not as massive as the Girodisc tool (that's what she said) so it fits in your toolbox/track box.

So if you need to spread things...I'm the man!

Seriously, a much better alternative to using your expensive racing pads as a spreader. And you push the pistons in straight everytime. Well worth it if you ask me and this should speed up pad changes.

Looks great! I used to use C-clamps on Brembos...

Unfortunately the M3 doesn't come with multi-piston brakes.

Nice find! I think I'll get that rather than the 3x as expensive Girodisc.

Nice find. I have the girodisc, but certainly would have considered this instead.

For those that want the Girodisc...try getting it through UUC with a 15% off sale. Although the ad says otherwise it will apply the discount.

The girodisc tool is just too damned big for the occasional use at the track. I already carry enough crap. If there's any situation where I'll be in a time pinch and want to spread the pads and pistons quickly...it would be at the track.

So I think this tool is the perfect HPDE companion.

ive just been using a c clamp to compress the rear piston and push out the front pad at the same time while still on the rotor. is this not the correct procedure? have done numerous pad changes this way.

A C clamp is not a sexy and only costs $8 bucks or so. Get with the times

With my spreader...you can immediately start discussing different OB/GYN techniques with the hotties at the track and go from there. He spreads, he scores!

Where do you go with a C clamp? It's like carrying a cellphone that looks like this...

This tool allows you to push the piston in straight. Not to mention you don't mess up the edges of your pads. And you don't have to take off the master cylinder cap if you're quick inserting the pads (a minor pain in an E9X). And its just easier.

i already can talk about ob/gyn without a prop. i havent ever taken the master cylinder cover off when changing pads. hasnt been an issue. set up the c clamp so it rests the inboard pad on the caliper and the outboard one on the center of the outboard pad. tighten and then remove pad and caliper and insert others. am i doing it wrong?

You da man! I don't have a lot of game, in fact almost nil so I need a prop.

The c clamp works on the OEM calipers. This is more for fixed calipers where some people use the brake pads to push the pistons back. That works too but you can kind of jack up your pads a bit and it does take some effort. Its really not fun when the brakes might be a tad hot.

This tool makes life much easier. Definitely not necessary, a nice to have thing which is why I won't spend $200 on this.

How do you guys use the pads to spread the pistons? I just a set of big pliers and opened them up on the pads.
I think I may need to get this, but how do you get the metal shim on this unit between the pad and disc? or do you just use the little ears on the pad (Stoptech calipers)?

.

Good find. Have you used it yet? If yes, what kind of brakes do you have?

Haven't used it yet. My wife has been at work all day.

I will use it this weekend on my stoptech calipers (ST40/ST22). I'll try and use it on a buddy's ST60 calipers as well.

I can usually pull the pads out of my ST40 calipers. But you just push on the ears to get enough space to take out the pads. Then you insert the tool and spread.

Are you sure your tool is the right size? I don't see how you can get that little thing to work.

I have a hard time doing the C clamp method on the front calipers. I'm not sure why, but I can't compress the piston very much when they're still on the car. I have to take them off then compress.

Maybe this is the ticket.

i have a $25 version that i bought online from a canadian auto parts/tools company that will handle four piston brakes like the brembos on my acura, but it is not wide enough to do the 6 piston brakes. is that tool wide enough to do 380mm 6 piston calipers?

I'm not sure. I can check this afternoon. I will post a little video of how well this tool works which should help you all decide if this is worth it. I'll try and make it entertaining as well!

pads look pretty thick so may be hard to get under your brake pads?

you typically have to just grab the lips on the edge at the beginning to just get it going and then are able to stick the tool in further and the pads will slide out. of course the tool has to be thinner than the maximum available gap with the pistons completely compressed. typically you only have to get the pads barely moved to be able to remove them by hand. then you just stick the tool all the way in to compress all the pistons at once. some ABS systems do not like the brake fluid pushed backwards, so it is vehicle specific whether you push it back to the reservoir or open a caliper bleeder screw and push it out to a container.
