seriously though, i watched all the documentary that solefald posted earlier, those russians got fucked up. the people that are at the diiachi plant still are surely going to suffer from the same shit. it might not be chernobyl yet, but it has plenty of the capacity to do so. i hope it doesn't happen, but that would be a large chunk of an island nation gone if they had to quarantine it.

besides, who the F#$! build a nuclear power plant on the ocean in an earthquake zone like japan?!

No choice, man. Limited space for an island nation.

japanese coined the phrase 'tsunami', build nuke plant on fault line, tsunami. that's the only part that makes no sense to me. don't get me wrong...i <3 japan, but seems like someone was asleep on the wheel with that choice.

I could be wrong, but I think you MUST build nuclear reactors near huge bodies of water precisely for cases like this. And there're not many places NOT on the ocean shore (and many of them have other nuclear plants) - so this place is as good as any. As far as the fault line goes - there are at least three underneath japan, so again - half a dozen of one, six of the other. I bet you it was a coin toss.

I think here in California we have two nuclear plants on the shore. You need large amounts of water to cool it so they have no choice but build it by the ocean.

but i thought they only used sea water in emergencies. salt water is pretty corrosive.

It would definitely cause corrosion if they just got it from the ocean and dumped it in there but the water is desalinated to convert salt water to fresh water.

desalination in itself is a major power consumer. i can't see that it would be very efficient to desalinate water to cool the reactor, but i'm no nuclear engineer.

lol my guess would be that since cali is already low on fresh water supply, they would rather use energy to desalinate

Right, but that's the point - you need a large body of water if all else fails - which is pretty much the case here. This is why they put landing strips in a wide open field or near shallow water - so if something goes wrong, there is room for error.

The Fukishima 50

Heroes.

Five have been killed. Two are missing. Twenty-one have been injured in a struggle where, in the words of Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan, "retreat is unthinkable." The men understand the stakes. They know there is no turning back. One worker told a departing colleague he was prepared to die - that it was his job. Another informed his wife he wouldn't be coming home anytime soon.

And so they battle on, a weary bunch of managers, operators, technicians, soldiers, firemen, amid rumours, worst-case scenarios and startling television footage.

They are mid- and low-level employees. They are men with no names, cast into extraordinary circumstances, battling fires, explosions, the threat of explosion and the invisible menace: dangerously high levels of radiation no protective suit can deflect, and one that threatens to seep into the atmosphere if they fail.
