Extending Warranty

Bought my 2008 E92 a couple of weeks ago now and am thoroughly enjoying the ride.

Got a one years warranty from the BMW dealership and am just wondering if it's possible to extend the warranty with it being a used car or does this only apply on new vehicles? Thanks.

typically, you can only extend the warranty if the car is still under the original bmw warranty (4yrs/50k) miles; i'm guessing your 2008 does not qualify in that regards; not sure what you mean by bmw dealer warranty; is this something that specific dealer offered you?

if so, check with your dealer to see if they sell custom extended plans

in regards to the BMW extended warranties, it sounds like you're not eligible

You can get an extended warranty for your 08, as I just got mine done. It was expensive though, but it started at the mileage that is on the car. PM if you need more details on the warranty.

BMW's own Extended Vehicle Protection is a popular option. You can only buy it if the car is still under the original factory warranty.

Dan Dutton @ Pacific BMW in California has some very competitive pricing. It's where I got mine.

Hey, finally got BMW to email me some quotes. I still have 1.5 years left on my warranty so just looking ahead. These are the rates he sent me. They seem a little high don't they?

"Good morning! Below are quotes for both 2 and 3 year service extensions as well as 2 years for maintenance."

· Maintenance – 2yr/100K - $3795

· Extended Vehicle Protection – 2yr/70k - $5802

· Extended Vehicle Protection – 3yr/70k - $6570

Hey man, thanks for your informative reply! My car has 45k miles on the clock so from what you've stated I guess it's still under the original warranty, comprende? If so, I guess I shouldn't hand about and get it extended whilst I still can?????? Cheers!

Maintenance plan is separate.

There must be some more competitive pricing out there.

There is. Call Dan Dutton @ Pacific BMW. They sell the stuff at a very competitive price.

IMO, the maintenance plan is not worth the money unless you plan to rack up a TON of mileage. Even if you negotiate it down to $2500, and it adds 3 years of coverage, you could just put that $2500 in the bank and earn some interest on it...or invest it safely and maybe make 8-10%.

What does a brake job cost on these cars?

Also, please teach me where to invest safely and earn 10%.

The things is with me guys, I work in the oil and gas so consequently will only be racking up on average 7k miles per year absolute tops! So might be lucky on the forking out big shillings for maintenance front for a couple of years with it only just having been serviced in June of this year here's hoping lol..

Did you miss the part where it says 4 Years OR 50k miles? Whichever comes first.

Here is what I was quoted for the Powertrain Plus. Honestly I just want the engine and DCT covered that's the real costs associated with this car if there is a problem.

For the Powertrain Plus coverage see below:

· 2yr/70k - $3720

· 3yr/70k - $4120

Here is the breakdown for what you get with powertrain plus versus the other two plans. Looks like the 3 year is honestly the best deal. Work out to around 114 per month versus the 2 year 155 per month.

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rotection.aspx

Still a hard pill to swallow. I don't drive allot maybe 5k a year, and my car has only 12k miles so I'll skip the maintenance.

Wow that is much too high, for my new M3 my dealer had the Platinum Mechanical Repair protection :

2years/100k for $3,000 but it has a deductible: $100 Disappearing **.

The full maintenance upgrade for 2 years/100k was $3,200.

** I assume that means anything under $100 is out of pocket and anything above is 100% covered.

I didn't accept either Was that a good deal ?

That's high.

I would try to get a Zurich warranty. I think I paid $2500 back in 2008 to extend to to 70K or 6 years, and the other option was like $3300 to extend to 100k or 6 years.

They paid for my ICV and fuel pressure sensor, and a door actuator without any issues. I never took them up on rental cars or anything, and the deductible was $50.

Mike, was that the "powertrain plus", "gold", or "platinum" program ? You can see the link above for what's covered under each.

I wonder why they quoted me such a high price? Versus what you were offered and what I am being offered there is a big difference in price and coverage!! Maybe its because they give a brand new vehicle purchase a better discount than a older car?

For me, the extended warranty or the maintainance plan is a waste of money. Our cars are pretty much bullet proof. Maintain it and you'll be fine.

However, if you track your car or have to deal with bumper to bumper traffic all the time, then you might want to consider it. Because these two circumstances really abuse our cars. Other than that don't waste your money.

Some forum members got over 100,000 miles and more without any costly issue and that the M3 is the most reliable car in all of BMW's lineup. It would be nice to have some statistics to back that up.

There is some concern but the overwhelming majority are not affected. There is some belief that if your engine doesn't blow up while under warranty it is should be sound. There are noted cases breaking out of warranty but many are (not all) supercharged. So eliminating all those cases, I would not let that thread scaring you.

I believe I purchased the Platinum one. I also got the $3395 maintenance plan through BMW, but it was kind of a waste.. They have covered a couple of oil changes and wiper blades, but I'll have to drive 8,000 miles between now and April before they will replace my front rotors and pads. Don't think that will happen, and that job is likely the highest ticket maintenance item on this car. I think it would be worth it for someone that does more than 10K a year though.
