Is there a different between 96y and 100y

Recently replaced my tires from stock oem sizes to 255/275 pss and noticed the front tire 96y and rear 100y. Not sure what this means.

Basically 96 and 100 is just max weight load a car can handle. 96 mean 1565lbs max and 100 mean 1764lbs max. The "Y" is speed index, higher the letter the faster the speed rating which in your case Y is up to 186 mph the tire can handle.

I hope the above link will clear your confusion.

Your rear has higher load rating because it's simply wider and can handle more weight.

Absolutely incorrect. It's due to the design specifications/requirements. Michelin has multiple designs for the same model tire and size because one design doesn't fit all cars (e.g., model, make, and size).

So are you saying these tires are not recommended for an M3?

First: don't worry, 96Y front and 100Y rear exceed the original equipment load ratings and are more than adequate to support the gross weight ratings for the M3.

While MadeInTaiwan is essentially correct, bdaddylo does raise a worthwhile point.

It is true that (all else being equal) a larger tire will generally be able to handle more weight. It is also true that there are often different load ratings available in a given size. They make both 92 and 96 load index PSS in 255/35R19, and both 96 and 100 load index for the rear.
