when you turn it to some degree, does the dash board lights all up? (or maybe just the orange lights up). If so, you can pull it out to do the pin setup for the light switch.

The post earlier about hitting it with your knee would be great if that's what it's for. In my first thousand miles I have hit it twice.

Like the earlier post stated, its the super secret call your BMW Service Advisor button. It can only be depressed when there is something wrong with that switch and it is telling you that you need to take it in right away.

Ok, after all the wonderfull answers
LOTS of BMW models do this, but mostly in the USA It is a a crash regulation stating that the switch must have some give incase the driver knee hits it in a crash. These regulations are also the reason USA cars dont get the small cubby hole under the light switch, but instead get more knee protection |

E90fleet's right as usual
you have to push it harder than most would be comfortable pushing to make it go in I hit it accidentally with my knee one time, thought I'd broke it but I just pulled it back out and it was fine 325 built in munich |

Lol I was expecting something a little more exciting than what it really is for. Thanks to everyone on the first page for coming up with those brilliant ideas!
