What kind of radar detector do you have on your m3
Debating whether to get the passport or not, I have a deal to get it for $350. I drive on the highway a lot. Sometimes I think that the drive would be more fun if I have one and stop worrying how many mls above speed limit im going. Do you guys recommend any?

I have the 9500.
It works very well and the GPS option is great. Basically, if you know a radar pickup is false (coming from a store, speed limit sign, etc) you hit a button and the radar can lock out the location. Once it's locked out, it won't go off in that location again. It has definitely saved me a number of times. If you are doing 70 in a 60, you usually have enough time to slow down if they hit you with laser or instant on. Above that, the radar going off is just telling you, that you got a ticket. Where the detector really shines is if you drive backroads. Out here, the backroads are often cruised by highway patrol. Since they have nowhere to hide, they just drive with their radar on and you pick them up a mile out. |

i have a passport, and i took out of my car years ago because it easier just to be vigilent about speeding when its safe to do so. never been pulled over on the track: few black flags is all.

I've thad the V1 and now the 9500. My nod goes to the 9500 for performance, plus the GPS feature. Now if only they could put the 2 together and give my 9500 some arrows...

True ... only I don't need a radar detector, I just don't since in some places it is against the law to have one. I ho 10% above the posted limit (sometimes faster ... don't tell anyone ... naturally overtaking trucks I go like hell).

Escort Smart Radar with Escort Live.
Love it! Works wonders when you understand that its not a Cop detector and its a RADAR detector.

Only if you turn them ON. Seriously, IMO they work, but they're not for everyone; thinking of the dude that blew by me in his C63AMG on I-49 as the Passport was alerting that a someone had a Ka band radar unit just over the hill. AMG driver was likely going 120+mph when nailed. Back on topic... Currently, there's either a Valentine, Passport and Beltronics in the three cars that I drive. For out of town driving, I prefer the Passport. In town, it's about a wash IMO. FWIW, in the last few months the Beltronics unit started alerting for Ku band radar which I had activated from day one, but apparently that frequency is only now starting to be employed in this area in conjunction with K, Ka and Lidar. The Passport 9500 will not detect Ku band activity while the Valentine will once it has been manually activated as it ships from the factory set to OFF. However, it seems that the audible alert for Ku is identical to the K alert unlike it is with the Beltronics detector.

I have the new K40 360i RL (I think that's the title) with G5 laser diffuser in both my M and TTRS. It is a huge improvement over the old K40. Much better responsiveness and is not so sensitive to every bank, grocery store, etc that would make detectors go off. You can customize the volume and speed of the vehicle with the detector to be silent or go off. I have it set at 30Mph so I can still see the lights go off if it is radar, but will not make a sound unless you go above 30.
It is now much easier to install and conceal and uses 4-6 diodes for greater response and distance. My old k40 for laser or KA would barely give me enough notice and would basically go off in about a 100ft radius. This new one has caught laser and KA bands in upwards of a mile (was not speeding in either instance) and can catch from both sides and rear much better. I was actually shocked when it alerted me as I did not see anything. Low and behold about a mile later the signal got stronger and I passed the LO. Also has a GPS that you can program to the car of common spots that are either false alarms or actual speed traps. Highly recommend |

I have a passport and I got ticketed last week..... damn lasers.... there is no time to slow down or react. At least the state trooper had a good laugh while I was cursing out my radar detector.

I own two Valentine 1 radar detectors. They are my detector of choice.

K40 RL360 in my M3
My wife has an Escort Qi45 in her car and I have a second Qi45 that I'm about to install in my truck. I don't like windsheild mounted units and both of these work very well, but I feel the K40 has better range and with seperate front and rear antennas, I get a better idea of where the police are. |

Gotta disagree with you on this one Rolf. It's not so easy when you have a busy life to just get to a track. Much of my fun driving is also interspersed with real life transport. I do it in spurts whenever I get the chance. Now...sustained high speed driving on public roads is a different matter and this is not what I am referring to, however, I have driven upwards of 90-100mph almost every day that I drive. I have done this type of stuff for over 30 years and have never come even remotely close to being in a speed related accident so obviously my driving style has stood the ultimate test of time. I have also been using a radar detector of some sort since age 17. Currently using a V1 and a blinder laser jammer.
