wow, this is a good post. I am also thinking about trading my 335xi in for an ///M3 later this summer. It's good to hear some feedback. I'm also thinking about a 09-10 Porsche Cayman S

I've owned a modded 335 and e92 M3. Both are great cars. When pushed the M3 shines and is more confidence inspiring. Unfortunately, there are not that many opportunities short of a track to push the car. But when you do....

What's there to think about?

Drove a 2009 M3 DCT
Ok, there is no comparison. Hands down the M3 is much more engaging and fun to drive. What I couldn't get over is how composed the chassis felt in-spite of the fact I was driving much faster over the same local roads I drive my 335i. It took hard bumps with ease, total control and so hooked up. The engine felt so willing (limited to 5000 rpm in a green motor with 30 miles on it). Wow! The only question is what color....

I am also consideing switching from a 335i to an M3. I don't think there is any doubt about the fact that the M3 will outperform a 335i. The question is does the increase in performance apply to your use of the car. In my case I am not sure. My 335i is a convertible and if I get an M3 it will also be a convertible. Based on this alone it will not be a track car. I have a dedicated track car (spec Miata) and am seriously considering replacing it with a Lotus.
I don't think that it is possible to explore the limits of either a 335 or an M3 on public roads unless you have a serious death wish or are just simply irresponsible. Since I have never driven an M3 my opinion is pure speculation. I will arrange a test drive later this year or better yet do a few laps of Lime Rock in one of the Skip Barber School's M3s. After that I will have a more valid opinion but I have a great deal of respect for the M3. CA
