DCT Transmission Shift without engine running

Recently my dealer installed a new software update which effected the DCT transmission. I cannot shift out of Park without the engine running, AND, I cannot start the car without the seat belt fastened. This is a pain in the Axx. What would you do if you had a garage fire. The fireman could not move the car with out starting it. Diddo if it needed towing and could not be started. How do you get a car on a roll back with the transmission in Park.

The car is going back to the dealer on Friday - To me, unacceptable this way.

Comments?

Huh, I had the DCT update installed about a month ago and I can still start my car without my seatbelt on. Haven't tried shifting out of park without the engine running so I have no idea if that's related to the DCT update.

dbarnes - I misspoke. I can start with out the seat belt. But can you shift out of park into an active gear without your seat belt on? I can get mine into neutral, but not an active gear. I do not like this set up, and I am going to get it changed if at all possible.

Yes - I had my car at a friends shop a couple of weeks ago and we had to reposition the car so it was centered on his lift. Did not need to put my seatbelt on to move the car forward as well as in reverse. Now I haven't tried moving the car with the door open so I'm not sure what DCT will do if I have the door open.

Thanks, this will help when I go into the dealer on Friday. My car will not go into gear with the seat belt on. I can put a "dummy" belt end (from spare seat belt) into the seat belt recepticle and the car will go into gear. A work around if all else fails, but still I think the deal sucks.

It will automatically put the car into neutral. IIRC, this "feature" was also not present on the original builds either, it was added via a software update sometime ago.

I don't think they will be keen on going back to an old version of the software. But its worth a try. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, let us know how it goes. I put the same comments on my service evaluation when my software was upgraded last week. Software upgrade is a down grade. Three things I noticed.
1) You can not move the car without the seatbelt fastened. Every morning I have to move my car about 20' get out and close a gate. Car now won't stay in gear without a seat belt so what I do is start the car and then put the passenger belt in the driver's side socket.
2) Can't engage gear with the door open. Ever back up next to a curb or obstacle and want to look out the open driver's door to check to see you don't hit anything. Can't do that anymore either.
3) The stupid gong function seems to go all the time now. Back up out of a parking spot and put it into neutral while still rolling, "GONG." Going home and pull up to the gate that I have to open, while still rolling forward at 0.5 mph in neutral, "GONG." " Stop car, in neutral, engine running, handbrake on, "GONG, Park setting not engaged." Why does it tell me that the car never engages park function while running.

I suspect they think they are making the car "safer" but have added no enhanced safety, just nuisance. You can drive your car without the seatbelt on once you are going, you just can't start from a stop.

Yeah, yeah... want me to name the reasons to not get a 6MT? I won't bother because it isn't worth the effort any longer.

OP... you can manually put the car in neutral if need be. It's in the manual.

This one is not so new. My 9/10 build car, factory installed software, never updated, does this as well...

Software is whacked up in my opinion, I can choose all gears (1-7 and R) without the seat belt on. But, with the door open it's 50/50 the car will go from R to N.

BMW needs to address this and stop wasting time on useless ///M's like the Frozen Silver.

My E92 was back at the dealer yesterday, but relative to this topic, there was no cure for what has already been done. Guess we have to live with it. If there is any satisfaction, the dealer has to live with the same problem, and they too are complaining. But, alas, I have a work around - I have a key
