Pontiac G8

What do people think of this car. Should be fast. Handling? Stigma?

http://www.caranddriver.com/autoshow...ontiac-g8.html

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/07/c...-pontiac-g8-h/

The base G8 model receives a 3.6L DOHC V-6 with variable valve timing, rated at 261 horsepower (194 kW). It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.

The G8 GT is powered by a uniquely configured 6.0L small-block V-8, rated at 362 horsepower (270 kW) and 391 lb.-ft. of torque (530 Nm). A six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode is standard and features the fuel-saving Active Fuel Management system, which enhances fuel economy by alternating between eight- and four-cylinder power. An optional six-speed manual transmission will be available soon after launch.

A limited-slip rear differential is standard with GT models.

It's ugly and it's a Pontiac! If it's built like any other Pontiac I have been in I'd stay away.

It's not a Pontiac. It just wears the Pontiac badge. It's actually a Holden Commodore. Don't bring perception into this because you know what the perception of BMW's are.

Actually, its a Pontiac. The quality differences and subtle nuiances between products sold as Holden cars and products sold as Pontiacs have been duly noted by Holden faithful and those who have experienced both cars first hand. It's almost to the point of Tahoe vs. Yukon. 300C vs. Magnum, LS460 vs. Camry... Hahaa, I kid on that last one.

Good for a pontiac.... but unless the price was insanely cheap, i couldn't deal with it, even when they are given a good car, they will somehow bitch it up.

Holden and Pontiac have never shared vehicles until the GTO which was based off of the Monaro. The new Commodore has won praise down in Australia. So far critics here love the Commodore as well and can't wait until the G8.

The wheels and headlights really cheapen the look of the car imo. Should be quite the performer though.

The folks at 5th Gear seem to like it (and so do I):

Also, it's a 5 series competetor, so the weight isn't that bad considering what you are getting...

... And it's NOT a Pontiac.

Her exact words were:

"You can tell this car is Australian because it has no finesse"

and

"...all brawn...not much brain."

Hmmm....no doubt a fun car to drive tho...

Well after driving a SS-V Commodore (g8) i must say it is a great car. Handling and chassis are good but of course not like a BMW. However if you folks in the States are lucky you might be getting our HSV vehicles which is just an absolute blast to drive. I would choose a HSV GTS (soon to have LS3) over a 335 sedan anyday. Of course the HSV varient has much better handling and great dynamics over the SS-V(g8).

Should be a fun car and will probably be cheaper than it's competitors but I'm not sold on DOD yet.

What that article doesn't mention is there a third model coming out about a year or so after the initial release under the Pontiac/GM Performance Division brand of GXP. That car will have the 6.0 V8 like the GT version, but will be pumping out close to 450hp

I love BMW but I will be buying a G8. I will keep my 335/M3 (not sure whether I am keeping my 335 or going with the M3) and use the Pontiac as my daily driver.

Will it come with those 'oh-so-famous' Pontiac/GM "Fisher-Price" control buttons for the radio, A/C, etc. as well? Hey, any car company can make a fast car, but it doesn't mean it's high quality, it doesn't rattle or break, and it's fun to drive. While I agree that some of these new GM cars are good looking, I'd never drive one...unless I picked it up at the airport from Avis Rental.

Good luck with that.

I would take a fisher price A/C knob over a transmission not shifting into 2nd and 6th( Camry), fuel pump failing early( 335i), and broken camshafts(Tundra). Not saying the interior of the G8 is cheap as I have not sat in one yet to have a credible opinion.

I'd have to agree with that... At least you'll know that the all the good stuff is tried and true (engine at least).

I used to give GM a lot of crap over the years, however Holden has made some huge leaps and bounds with this particular car. Plus, it's been tested in the outback where the roads aren't necessarily nice! How many other cars can claim that?

It's obvious that you have never seen the inside of a Holden vehicle (i.e the GTO) of pics of the G8s interior. Very nice quality with great touch and feel. I have 66K miles on my goat and it still does not creak or rattle. Feels just as tight today as it did the day I drove it off the lot.

The G8 GT/GXP will be an easy car to tune and turn the power up via tuning software.

Don't worry bud there are always haters out there that have no idea about the cars themselves but they still choose to hate. There called badge whores

However we both love our muscle cars and especially Australian muscle cars that i must say look and drive great. Athough i must say the G8 body kit that Pontiac has put on is not my cup of tea. So im sure the SS-V kits will be brought in by the mods shops in the States and i know if you do get the car you'll probably be the first to get one. The G8 commodore should be out now, have you driven it yet?

Not yet. Jan 08 is the release and I will wait until the V8 model to go test drive. The tuners are already gearing up for the G8!
