2012 M3 Engine

I have read through a few sources that the 2012-2013 M3 V8 engine will be going back to a V6 or in-line 6. Are they for real?

Yes, they will be going back to a V6. Just like the 2000 and 2007 M3 had in the USA.

Nobody knows... speculations based on some comments.
Very difficult to tell, specially due to the fact that most of the other cars "from the competition" are (or will be V8s).... C63, S and RS4, Lexus ISF, etc.

Even for the next M5 there is still speculation of a turbo V8 Vs a V10.
The RS6 has a twin turbo V10 (and even the S6 has a V10) so it's not easy for BMW to downgrade engine their engine unless they are really able to produce a Turbo V8 masterpiece......
Remember that one of the selling points for the current M5 is the engine.
I don't think the german power war is over....We will see.

I assume you lot mean a straight 6 given that they have never used a V6 in a M car before.
6 pot TT will be sharp make no mistake, lighter too but doubt it will have as good a sound track.

It is not certain if it will be incline or V 6 but it will be 6 cylinders.

The engine will have use turbo, but they are not sure about the number, it can be 1,2 4? who knows?

The displacement will be around 3-3.2 lt

I'm excited to see the new engine. I'm guessing there will be tons of power potential hidden in it.

LOL...there will be a few 'surprises' for the aftermarket tuners out there who will ATTEMPT to extract more power form the engine.

The look on their faces will be priceless!

Lemans, you cant just say that and stop there! Are you saying the engine will be so maxed out straight from the factory that there will not be much room for improvement? Or is BMW implementing something to limit aftermarket tuning?

Please elaborate!

I guess this means that I better move fast and either get a 2010 or 2011 BMW M3 V8 No offense intended to the V6;in-line turbo engines, but they sound so whiny rather than a monster

+1
I'm guessing BMW will have some sensor that will brick the engine when you make more torque than you're suppose to.

Come one Lemans, give is a little more!!!

Not M3 2012 but M3 2014. It will either be upgraded 3.0l I6 of M1 or downgraded 4.4l V8 of M5 to 3.3l V6 (2 cylinders less).

The next generation M3 (called the F3x), like all generations of M3, will use a different motor from those before it, yes. All current chatter, including quotes from high ranking BMW officials, indeed suggests it will be a 6 cylinder motor with a turbo charger. You can all but take it to the bank at this point.

The 2012-2013 M3 will still be the E9x, and will still use the current V8. You can expect the F3x on the market in the US in late 2014 or early 2015 as a MY2015.

And yes, as FStop humorously () points out, there will very likley be no MY2014 M3 just as there was no MY2000 M3 and no MY2007 M3 (US model designations). However, there will still be a MY2012 and MY2013, its just that they'll still be an E9x with the V8 like I said above.
