New lens - new shoot

My Canon 85mm f/1.8 came in today so I decided to do a quick shoot of my car (at my old middle school of all places), loving the lens so far

Nice shots, Gary. But I see your 85mm has the same CA issues that mine does. Especially around lights.

unfortunately that's common with a LOT of fast lenses. even expensive ones. but not usually like what's in the shot of the engine start/stop button.

Just basic RAW edits in LR3.

There is CA wide open but it's manageable in most situations, my 50 f/1.4 was extremely soft wide open while this is sharper wide open but with a touch of fringing.

I find that gray fringing is almost impossible to see, so when I get that purple fringe I duplicate the layer, desaturate the bottom layer, and then use a layer mask on the top layer to paint over the fringing. It's quick and easy and hides that purple. The 85mm is the only lens I have that fringes that badly. Otherwise it's a great lens. I just try to avoid using it in situations where there are a lot of lights.

I assume you're talking about the pinkish/purple color around the halo's?

If so, is it that color from the color of the vehicle surrounding it...or is it something with the bright light itself that would have shown this no matter the vehicle color?

Yes, that purple. And it occurs on almost any light with the 85mm wide open. I have shots inside Grand Central Station in NYC that have the same purple around the globe lights on top of the news stand.

Very nice, enjoy.

Try DxO's Optics Pro. It'll fix that and all those other distortions. It's free to try.

Sweet lens. My favorite. Wish the 1.2 was cheaper tho. Nice ride as well.
