which ecu mod?
I'm thinking about buying an m3 that the dealer says was chipped by the previous owner but the dealer doesn't know which one. Is there any way to tell which one it is?

They aren't chipped they are flashed, and that dealer shouldn't be telling you that and should instead be flashing the car back to stock.

It could be a private dealer he's referring to. BMW will not knowingly sell a vehicle with a modified ECU with a warranty.

Yeah I guess your right anyways, if they can't flash it back to stock then there is no way they can tell you what software was used to flash it.

The car is not at a BMW dealer, it was a customer trade in at a different dealer. I called a bmw dealer regarding service history, they told me the warranty is intact until mid 2012.

This will b hard to trace, I think ur best bet would b to see if u can get the previous owners info or see if he/she was on any forum or anything to find out his software.

Quote:
1. pull out the ecu and see if the vendor put a sticker on it 2. put it in neutral and rev the engine, if it stops at 4.5k it has a AA tune. |

Call Dinan tomorrow and give them the VIN.
They can tell you if their performance software was ever flashed to the ECU on that particular car.
