About to order polishing kit $400

Hi guys, Im about to order a porter cable polishing kit fro autogeek with all the accessories I need. The total is about $400 and I wanted to know if it was worth it and if I can really get good results as posted on their website. Thanks

If you really want to learn how to polish and spend the time go for it. But it might be simpler and cheaper to just hire a pro

Yes, and yes. It'll take practice but you'll get there. The biggest thing for me was using enough pressure. I didn't realize what 25 pounds of pressure felt like until someone told me to go to a grocery store and use their veggie scale to see. Before that I would waste product like it was going out of style and not get the results that I get now.

What polisher do you use? From what I inderstand the porter cable 7424 turns off if you put too much presseure which is the main reason im getting it. I dont want to wat through my paint as I am not a pro.

I have a 7424. It won't turn off, you'll just overpower the motor and stop it from moving. IMO there is no safer machine to use. Especially good for beginners. I don't think it's even possible to burn the paint with a 7424. The random circles keep it from building up enough heat to hurt anything.

That brings up a question - how much do most of you guys pay for a good detailing of your M these days, and what does it include? Obviously you need to be careful who you take it to.

For 400 I think you can get a flex

I think chemical guys offer PC package for 200 bucks, and even if you add some good polishes, that's still under 300. You don't really need that much polishes because 16oz will last you a lifetime...

I've had nothing but bad expieriences with Autogeek, get a DI package from Detailedimage.com, waaaayyy better customer service. They have a Flex package for around $350 and you get Megs M105/205 thats basically all you need.

Everybody has their opinion.
First off, i have ordered from Autogeek many times and have never had a bad experience.
The 7424 and Flex are both excellent machines, results always depend on the operator not so much what products or equipment he or she uses.
What a professional will charge depends on the professional in question and of course what needs to be done or is wanted by the owner.
You know here in south florida you can get ANYTHING for almost nothing, but will you get quality?
Those just looking for the cheapest bargain i tell quickly to go elsewhere.
You don't walk in to Ruth Chris steakhouse and tell them that you had a steak at Sizzler for a fraction of the price, so why can't they match it.

PC is awesome

The PC is awesome and basically idiot proof. Checkout autopia and other detailing sites for more info on how to polish correctly. Its a great tool have fun with it.

To the OP, would you mind posting what the $400 kit includes? I can make up a kit for you of all the best products. Autogeek does a fairly terrible job of putting kits together and usually includes stuff you don't absolutely need.

I've had my PC 7424 for quite some time, and it has worked very well on most jobs.

Look around for good deals and then call up AutoGeek to price match. I want to say that I got mine for around $110 to $120. Then consider backing plate and a couple polishing pads. My memory is failing me now, but I want to say that my random-orbital also came with an extra counter-weight since the weight included during assembly is meant for holding a backing plate and sand paper.

I can't remember where I picked up my my backing plate from... definitely not a fan of the Meguiar's backing plate.

Maybe just start off with a few (low cut) polishing pads. I never was too fond of finishing pads, and you won't need more agressive pads if you keep the car's paint in generally good condition.

Place an order for this kit, but call CG up and ask them to replace the two included polishes w/ Paint Correction #1 and Paint Correction #2.

I am a noob in this and started with Zaino, it was to many steps and to hard to buff the product. I tried Griots Garage since they sponsor Roundel, 1 year ago someone told me about Adams polishes, since then I havent looked back. There is no better customer service in the world. PERIOD.

The easiest to apply and buff. if you dont want to mix and match brands, ADAMs will give you the best overall products. Go to his forums and learn about them and get the discount code as well. His kits come with free shipping as well. May I suggest the Junksman kit.
