I trust on BMW mechanics to give innocents like me decent and sound advice and based on what i have read prior to buying the car and everything else, i thought it was prudent just to replace the parts so not to suffer regret later. This is my one and only daily driver transporting my kids around so why would I not do due diligence and just replace them? Maybe im not that technical but visually, the bearings don't look too good to begin with. Maybe the engine was close to issues, maybe not, but why take the chance? thanks |

This E92 of mine is my first M car I have ever owned. I have wanted an M3 since 1995. I plan on keeping mine long term. Anything I can do to ensure it lasts, I will do. Perhaps, once the engine is old and tired years from now, I will get a full rebuild. But I want that to be years from now, not next year!! I did my bearings myself so the cost was minimal. I just checked and I have spent $3400 on fuel in 17000km. So the $1300 or so I spent doing the bearings is not so bad. Hell, tires for the pig cost me $1600. Cheap insurance given an engine swap would be minimum $15k here in Canada. Happy motoring.

Is there bearing hysteria? Yes
Does the forum also feed the hysteria? Yes Is this a relevant issue future owners need to know about? Yes Is it important to get the bearings replaced with one of the reputable aftermarket solutions? Yes Are all S65s in immanent danger? No Do all S65s suffer from this issue? No but we have no idea what percentage does. Having personally done more than 100 RB services I can say with certainty, than every single one of them had excessive wear, but no one knows if they were in immanent danger of engine failure. Every PPI that comes through my lift comes with the same question, "when should I, Or do I need to replace the rod bearings?" I always give the same answer. A $2500 bearing service is cheaper than a $15k engine replacement bill later. Being that I'm in Florida, I get a lot of well abused M3s for PPI, most of which are dumped to the auction because of the high maintenance cost or the PO got a bad Blackstone report. Then shady used car dealers pick them up cheap and try to sell them, leading to customers buying literal time bombs.

Wasn't red alert urgent but as OP wanted it done at some point he might as well take the cost right away, rather than wait and introduce risk. Similar cost to do it in a year or whatever right so all he would save is a few buck interest for taking the chance.

Who cares? Really, it's up to the OP or whoever hasn't done RB's to do it, I don't get why people who have not done an RB need to comment why it isn't necessary. Who made them BMW experts and knowing the condition internally of every BMW S65 motor. If someone wants to drop $3K on bearings, God bless, it's money well spent as anything new going in for maintenance just prolongs the life of the car.
Cue main bearing trolls :

It was just a matter of time before the "alternative facts" phenomenon infiltrated the car scene.
Go to LuckySevens profile and click on his post history, it's a lot of him just going to people's threads and crying about how there is no rod bearing issue and how it's a conspiracy concocted by side-street mechanics. .

Should have picked someone who isn't a bumbling mess. Jk. I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I'm confident it's just someone trolling for lulz or someone trying to justify to themselves their decision to not do RBs

thanks for the laugh this morning The class action lawsuit has been dragging on for a couple of years now and hasnt made any real progress. BMW will never admit fault and its nearly impossible to prove they're guilty of any wrongdoing. They will drag this out as long as possible.
