Wow I'd be beyond pissed quite honestly. And yeah it coulda been worst good thing it didn't happen at a straight away at higher speeds. Hopefully SSR does make it right. Just not cool.

Whew, makes me glad I no longer have my 18" SSR Comps - they were notoriously weak wheels. I was always inspecting them for cracks.

update on this, found out he had them powder coated. This also happened to another fella with volks. His words

"make sure you know their history and if they've ever been powdercoated in the past, or weird stuff like this can happen. That's a rays wheel BTW, not some knockoff. he cracked another one a couple weeks later.

the thing is, aluminum is usually aged at temperatures below the temps that powdercoat cures, which overages them and weakens the structure.

i was going to powdercoat my wheels at some point, but not after reading some of the engineering forums regarding baking aluminum wheels at those temperatures. it's not a gamble i would take.


Anyone else experience this? and should i just change thread title to dont powdercoat wheels in general? I would hate to throw SSR's name in the mud for no reason?

Not sure? a friend of his let him borrow a set of rears and he still had balls to finish the rest of the day tracking with the same front (SSR's)

That's surprising because SSR relaunched last year or so, new management and supposedly focused on higher production standards (whereas in the past they were known for being quite soft).

Edit: saw the update, OP I've read the same which is why I don't plan on getting my RE-30's powdercoated. I'll just have the curb rash fixed the old fashioned way.

I know right? I was goona powder coat my valve cover lavender well NOT ANYMORE!!! and have it crack on me going to work. In fact powder coating means nothing to me now, back to rattle cans.

I never knew that powder coating weakened aluminum wheels to that degree. Thanks for the info.

Not all that rare really. SSR's aren't that strong of rims in the first place. My friend bent 3 of his 4 on his e36 track car over the years. Its really not the rare to see rims fail out on the track if they aren't forged. Those gator strips aren't kind.

It all depends on how the powder coater does it. Not all power coating will weaken the wheels. For example, all of HREs standard finish are mostly powder coated, though they have figured out a way to do it with out putting their forged wheels back to the tempered temperature range that would weaken the forging properly. Most likley the powder coater overbaked the wheels.
