Post ApexRaceParts - GT4 style brake duct PREVIEW

Here's a preview of the ApexRaceParts GT4 style duct kit

Design:
The Carbon ducts were white light scanned and then modifications were made to the CAD profile before producing a prototype with a 3D printer. A mold was created using that sample pair to produce the ducts from ABS plastic.

Improvement:
These ABS ducts have been modified to include a thicker ring where the hose connects. The carbon ducts are only 2.75" OD and not a true 3" connection. The added ring results in a tighter more secure fit. It helps prevent hoses from sliding off, or hose clams from crushing the tube if tightened too hard.

Weight:
The original carbon ducts are 0.8 ounces each. The new ABS ducts are 1.6 ounces each. This is such a low weight, that the benefits of carbon fiber weight savings on such a small part is negligible in addition to costly.

Final Product:
8 months ago the first batch was produced, but with an incorrect plastic mix, which resulted in a very rubbery part. The pictures below are of the final product made from the correct material. This plastic remains ridged at high temperatures, yet has enough flexibility to handle abuse. The black finish shown below is the natural black finish of the plastic. No paint or other finish will be applied as this is a race part, in a hard to see area of the car.

Backing Plates:
Backing plates are still in production with no sneak-peak photos available. They are being developed in multiple sizes to work with both an OEM brakes, and for vehicles with a BBK. Complete kits with ducts, hoses, backing plates, and mounting hardware will be available.

Your input:
Since these kits were developed for track enthusiasts on a budget, and not everyone runs the same vehicle setup, please vote in the poll above to let us know how you would want to use this kit.

The OEM design could greatly benefit from these as well as some backing plates. Let me know if you need to do some on track testing.

About 30 pairs are already completed. They could either be on hold and released as a full kit, or made available alone before the backing plates are complete. It's possible some members would want just the ducts now and then add the true plates later (some members are fine with modifications to their OE dust shields, and similar mods).

This thread is a good place to discuss what is wanted from this kit. It should be build based on the input of community of knowledge.

Wow, someone's finally coming out with a solution! I voted duct + backing plates. But that's because I'm not really sure if ducting alone will provide enough cooling to prevent the M3 brake fade problem. I'm really anxious to see how well this works.

Would this be a full kit, sa. ducts, hose, backing plate, clamps and whatever else is needed to fasten the whole thing securely? Or is it just the duct and backing plate parts that you're offering?

Cheers.

About time someone is getting this to market. I think the stock brakes will be just fine with proper pads and ducting.
I sent you a pm.

Agreed, making these ducts out of CF seems like a waste of money.

Very Nice

As with your wheels, the brake duct design looks solid. It's likely that there's a market for full kits as well as various combinations of individual components. Do you have an idea what the retail price will be for a full kit?

any sense for timing of when this will be available? track season around here starts in April, and I'd like to get some ducting set up by then.

ducts are done, no firm ETA on the backing plates. But before April is definitely do-able.
