that's got nothing to do w/ it. Hydroplaning doesn't matter what's on; you're along for the ride.

He was a passenger in that one! One thing that's good to know though, that car will be calling the occupants an ambulance!
Just as he hit the wall, the hazards flashed once. Is this because the car came to a stop after hard braking? That worked I suppose!

9 x sqrt of tire pressure in psi=hydroplane speed

Dynamic Hydroplaning

Dynamic hydroplaning is a condition where the tire is lifted completely above the surface of the runway. As little as one-tenth inch of water combined with the “NASA critical speed” of the tire is the causal factor.

Viscous Hydroplaning

Viscous hydroplaning can occur at slower speeds and rather than the water lifting the tire from the pavement, the tire slips on a thin film. This occurs on smooth runways.

Reverted Rubber (Steam) Hydroplaning

Encountering an emergency during takeoff or landing often causes the pilot to “lock” the brakes. If this occurs on a wet runway, the tire track area heats up due to friction causing some of the rubber to “revert back” to a gummy state, trapping water. The water turns to steam and steam pressure lifts the tire from the runway.

Not true. AWD and 4WD only helps when power is being applied. 1 wheel drive or 16 wheel drive, it doesn't matter if the car is braking or power off wheels. In fact, if you quickly let off the gas in a awd car, the engine braking effect could lock up 4 wheels instead of just 2.

No reason to play around in these conditions. What concerns me is the pass door looks like it was ripped open from the center barrier. Overall it was not a very violent crash, hopefully he was ok...

I just can't believe that the driver who was recording didn't yell at all during that whole thing. Just silence while moving over.

As someone who spun and did 2 360s on the highway many many years ago, and have taken multiple track classes and many many track days since then, here is what I think happened.

if you look, he was carrying momentum into the median. which means he accelerated during the lane change pretty aggressively.

Mistake 1 and primary mistake was he was going too fast with too aggressive at of an angle.

Mistake 2 and the kiss of death was he braked hard (see slomo at 43sec mark on the video). First rule is you cannot brake as this shifts momentum to the front which is already hydroplaning and the rear will swing around.

Once he made mistake 1, the DSC (if it was on) should have kicked in and he should have only steered minimally. braking just doomed him.

Scary...

I was on that same highway last week, but in dry conditions. Hope the driver was alright

Man, hydroplaning is scary. I agree with other posters...once it starts, you're on an ice rink. I've seen way too many cars and suvs crash just like this on the snow and ice too in the mountains.

Yeah, scary to see that door fly off. If there was an unbelted passenger we'd be seeing that gnarly Saudi drifting video all over again!

Does anybody see the REAL reason this happened. Driver of the M3 was thinking he was a pro racing driver and tries to take the car with the camera with another car in front of him. Driver of the M3 accelerates to SQUEEZE and loses control. Good for you. Next time slow down.
Good thing that M3's are solid cars.
Ditto. As long as no one was hurt, driver got what he deserved IMO.
