Just received my M3
Took delivery of a 2009 jet black sedan. I've been an Audi fanatic for years, but I'm officially converted. This car oozes quality and muscle car at the same time.
I know it's personal preference, but I'd like to hear some opinions. The car came with tinted windows (even though front sides are illegal in NJ) and graphite wheels. While I love how aggressive this combo looks, I'm wondering if it's too much. I'm 40 years old. While nobody can accuse me of being conservative, I am an attorney and will be seen by clients and industry professionals. I'm considering removing the tint and trading the wheels for polished silver. What do you think? |

congrats on your new ride. I am also from NJ and IMHO I wouldn't care if you have bad ass car. I want an attorney who is good at work. I don't care about the personal choice. I suggest don't make changes for others. Your clients shouldn't be concern about cool looking car. cheers!!
ps what type of attorney are you? |

I drive a Melbourne Red 08 E93 with the graphite wheels, tints and black grill. I too am an attorney, but have 12 years on you. Still, if you are an up and comer, and will be seen by clients and industry professionals, you may want to tone it down. Luckily for me I don't care and my clients do not care either. In fact I want to respray my wheels black (partly for the look, partly due to road rash by the prior owner).

Being an attorney you definitely don't want involvement with something illegal - tint - and in such a highly visible situation.

I have always thought about window tint vs no window tint too but considering I am 21, I feel I can still pass with it. I have limo (5%). I told myself by the time I am 30 I will never run any darker than 35%. So, depending on what it is, you should make a decision accordingly. Post pics of the car.
Congrats! |

If the tint is illegal, I'd remove it since it's probably pretty common knowledge that it's illegal. As for the wheels and aggressive look, I guess it would come down to what type of an attorney you are. Criminal vs civil, defense vs prosecution, etc.
Personally, if my attorney showed up in an E90 M3 with dark tint and aggressive wheels, I'd be thinking "If this guy behaves in the court room like he buys cars, I made the right choice." I want my lawyer to defend me aggressively. But, I'm an automotive enthusiast. A non enthusiast may view you negatively, but I think most people won't give it much thought. I think your conduct when dealing with clients and peers will speak much louder than your choice in transportation.

By the way, I know 19 inch wheels look better, but I'm loving the way the 18s feel on the road. My S4 had low profile tires and both the tires and wheels and took a beating on the NY/NJ streets.

Congrats fella!
Looks good, and to be honest I completely agree about that perception worry you have. I live in London, UK, live on the outskirts but work in the city. My blacked out E92 gets attention everywhere I go which is fine when I'm just being a car enthusiast around town, but on the few occasions that I've travelled into the city to make a quick stop to the office, it gets the same attention and i worry about it looking unprofessional. However that said, your picture seems absolutely fine. Agreed losing the tints will definitely make a big change, but as long as you don't have a noisy tailpipe, loud red side gills or 21 inch wheels (which we all want and love lol) I don't think it'll harm your professional image Besides I'm sure your car will be a great conversation starter anyway, it's a great car and who knows when you may have a client that will warm to it! Enjoy it bud, we live once

I have to say that as an attorney, my private clients like that I have an M3. Insurance adjusters don't. Opposing counsel doesn't. I am also single with no kids... that I know of! I've always had fun cars though including P-cars, other M3/5's and AMG's.

I think that looks conservative enough that you wont have to worry about creating a poor perception. Heck in FL just about every car is tinted.
