Blackstone Oil Report :)

After reading a few posts about rod bearing wear on our engines I decided to send a sample out to Blackstone.

I'm happy to report it seems not all engines are affected!

I just posted on the other thread how Castrol TWS 10W-60 cars tend to show bearing wear. Then I see this post.

That oil report is not Castrol 10w60:
1 Molybdenum way to high, castrol 1 to 3 parts ppm.
2 Magnesium only 30% of castrol.
3 Calcium way to high.
Definitely not castrol 10w60! Do you take your car for oil change or do you do it yourself? If you take it in for service get a sample of the new oil and ask what it is. Good oil though. Cheers


Lastly, I am surprised they didn't point out the high titanium.

Lol yeah I saw that. I have two reports that show no lead, granted I am under 10k miles, ill post them when I can get on my comp. I had slightly elevated copper but that has fallen in the second report from 24 to 10 and is most likely due to the oil cooler/ lingering break in metals.

This is the second recent report that shows a different uoa formulation for TWS now seems to includes moly and ti.

That oil report IS Castrol 10w60 as I'm the type that hangs around in the garage when my car goes to the dealer. I watched my tech pour it into the car.

Should I be worried about the high titanium?

Titanium is a newer, more environmentally friendly anti-wear additive being implemented due to more stringent emissions regulations, and is phasing out the older, more harmful phosphorous compounds such as ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate). ZDDP reduces the effectiveness of the catalysts in catalytic converters by creating a plating effect when combusted, and covering the catalyst while Titanium does not. Titanium chemically binds to wear surfaces creating a hard, Titanium based oxide layer which reduces friction, thereby reducing wear. Concentration levels vary greatly depending on oil brand.

I'm also thinking the bearing wear might be related to how long the car sits between drives. My car never sits more than 12 hours unless it's parked at the airport. There's always a residual film of oil on my bearings.

I was looking at the bearings from a small steam turbine the other day. I noticed that only one segment showed wear. It was the segment on bottom where the shaft sits when when not in use.

Thanks so much for the link, I am very familiar with TWS as I do regular UOAs, Just not familiar with new formulation yet as I have not done UOA with new formulation just put in the new, seems thicker. Thanks again.
