X5 35d MPG not significantly better than M3?

Chaps,

I drove a loaner X5 35d into work today owing to my M3's throttle actuator issues. I do tend to lead foot it, and I was pleasantly surprised that the X5's MPG over my 40 mile highway commute (21.3) wasn't significantly better than my M3's MPG (20.1).

Am I missing something here guys?

Hope you guys are having a wonderful day

You aren't driving the M3 right. 20 mpg is a no no.

You aren't driving the two cars the same. Leadfooting the X5 and babying the M3. I struggle to 22 on the highway in Indiana where it is flat... Much less city driving (14-15)

I have a 335d and it gets about double the gas mileage of my M3 in just about every kind of driving. I did a full track day once with the d and it only used a 1/4 of a tank, lol.

I'm certain the Diesel engine gets better mileage than the M3. It all depends on your driving distance and highway or stop n go traffic usage. But regardless it'll be more efficient than an M3.

I had a diesel for 24 hours. Driving quickly it was around 21.5-23.5mpg, driving conservatively but not slow (10 over, not rushing for red lights etc.) I did achieve 25.7mpg with 3 passengers on a 10-15mile trip to dinner.

It's all about how you drive, conserving gas is a skill for a driver as well.

My x5 35i got a lifetime mpg of 21. The x5d is limited by the 6spd vs 8 on the gasser.

thats not much better than the 18 avg i get in my regular x5. wanted to trade up for the extra torque and better towing capability. thought it would get more like 25 freeway since i can get 20-21 with 20s on my x5 3.0

We averaged about 15.5 in our mixed city highway with our 08 X5 4.8i. Our current 08 535xit gets 21.5 average. My 08 M3 averages 19.5. I think a diesel X5 would be great but am not sure the new ones with urea injection areas efficient. The X5 35i with newer 8 speed auto may be the way go go, plus the twin scroll turbo is more efficient than the twin turbo of a few years ago (like our 08 535xit).
