BMW Amending its once-a-year oil change
Looks like BMW is amending the requirements for the annual low mileage oil change...basically if you drive 6001 miles or more since the last oil change, BMW will no longer cover the additional oil change under the maintenance program. Here's the TIS that lays it out.
Seems like a rather big gap between 6000 miles or less, and the typical 15,000 mile trigger for an oil change.

It reads like they're not just changing whether or not it's covered, but whether it's even recommended (by them) to do. IOW, they're not saying it should be done but on your own dime.
So, if I drive 550 miles per month, they actually think 27 MONTHS between oil changes is the proper answer. Well, thanks for that.......

Lets see, i'm at 12700 miles now. I had my last oil change Oct. 21 2009 at 7800 miles. 7800+6000=13800. 13800-12700=1100 . So I have to have less than 13800 miles when I bring in my car AFTER Oct. 21 2010. So I have to keep under 1100 mi. in the next 2 mos., correct?

Now that I think of it, their reasoning doesn't make much sense. If the argument is that engine oils are much better now, why is changing the oil on a car that is driven less a good idea, but not one that is driven more?

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Because they might be thinking that this car is used in very short trips or not used for a long time interval hence producing more humidity condensation and contaminating the oil more.

If he's driven more than 6000 miles since last change, but not enough to trigger next "major" service, he will not be eligible under for an annual change under this revised policy even though he will be over one year. The interesting (to me) hole in this is if your drive 6001 miles after your last change you aren't eligible. As it's written, it implies this means you will never be eligible for a change under their program until your next scheduled service at intervals of 15K, 30K, etc. So, I drive 7201 miles the first year I get my 2011 out of sheer joy. Then, the next three years I drive 2500 miles per year. In this scenario, I never get to even the first service threshold of ~16200 while under the maintenance plan and it expires with only one oil change in 4 years. Now, that's pure genius!

Georgeair,
There is no example under 6,000 miles but I am pretty sure that it is saying that if you've gone at least a full year and you've driven 6,000 miles or less (those are the exact words) then you get a "free" oil change. So if you drive only 2,500 miles a year, you continue to get free oil changes annually. The worst case seems to be driving 6,001 miles per year. If you are easy on the car, you could go 15,000 miles or more before the service indicator comes on and get only one oil change on the dealer under the warranty/free maintenance. I would be close to this worst case since I drive about 7500 miles a year in my bimmer (plus another 10,000 in my SUV). I got my one "free" oil change in July after the first year. I should get one more on them. I am interested in this information but my initial reaction is to not change very much my plans. I was planning to change it myself semi-annually so the dealer would be doing every other oil change. I might extend things a little but probably not. If I extended to 7,500 it would mean annual oil changes and I think that is just too long regardless of mileage. Probably I will go to every 5,000 miles which is what I do on my SUV (which also has synthetic oil in it). I think the change makes it clear that BMW's only motivation is minimizing maintenance. Their CPO cars will get the minimum and be a really bad buy with implementation of this schedule. They should have to put a sticker on them detailed the lack of any sort of reasonable maintenance. Jim

Interesting...
Just did my first regular oil change a week ago. I am at 18000 km and went in under the one year minimum rule. After the oil change...i noticed they didn't seem to reset the service interval. It still at 8000 km for the next oil change. When asked...they just said its ok...no mistake. I definitely will go over the 8000 km mark before the year. And they have to do oil change for me when the service indicator is up. |

It's all about money folks . It's always a good idea to change oil once a year, regardless of mileage, and regardless of kind of oil used. I don't personally care since I decided to do my own maintenance . Just did my first oil change at 3K miles after the 1.2K service. And yes, I always put at least 10 miles (15 in winter) on my cars when I use them, to allow all condensation to evaporate; otherwise no engine oil is going to properly protect your engine for a year (and even less longer than that). By the way, you could also get an improperly high oil level reading if you allow condensation to accumulate over the months.
New SIB is quite clear to me. Here's my take: - Drive less than 6K miles in a year (or longer) and you get a free oil change. - If you drive 6,500 miles the first year, but 5,500 the second, you get a free oil change after the second year. - Drive your car more than 6,001 miles a year, and you won't get a free oil change until the CBS calls for one, which could be up to 2-1/2 years (6,001 + 6,001 + 3000). That's retarded IMO. Good day gang. |

Service date 8/14/09 with 9011 miles and I just got my free annual oil and filter change, free wiper blade replacement, free windshield washer antifreeze fill up, and free multipoint check, plus warranty recall replacement of belt pre-tensioners (upper belt front left and right). They did not reset the service interval.

So I just tried to schedule a yearly oil change at my dealer. It was last changed on Sept. 4, 2009. The dealer would not let me get it changed under the "old" maintenance plan on August 31st. Apparently BMW's guidance is very specific and states that it must be exactly a year before they will pay for an oil change. So it looks like I'll be paying for one next month.

Who buys an M3 to let it sit in the friggin garage? Doesn't that kind of make all the rants about other cars not being up to par pointless? Who cares how good it is if you never drive it???
Get out and drive and stop worrying about this low mileage crap. |

If you drive less than say 20,000Kms (12-15,000miles) annual on the highway, you aren't going to get the CBS to trigger an annual oil change. So for folks with annual mileage of 8-10,000 miles, you won't be getting the CBS service request. 8-10K miles isn't exactly low mileage. If you don't commute by car, then this is pretty high mileage. For others, you may have deployments, travel etc that take you away for long periods of time (certainly my situation) so you're not going to see mileage over 15,000miles (esp if you don't do short drives in traffic, which are probably more pointless than what you are discussing). So lots of legitimate possibilities here to explain the interest in this topic.

I dunno, I took delivery on Jan 18th and I'm at 12,272 miles as of right now. Granted of you lived on base and drove 3 miles to work your mileage is going to be way down but doesn't the CBS see lots of short trips and then move the interval up? If it's only about time spent on the highway then it's a pretty worthless system.
Having said all that my post was almost entirely in jest. I even remembered the smileys. |
