I notice higher oil consumption more so when doing highway miles versus back roads.

My 08 needs about 1/4 to 1/2 of a bottle every 10k miles. The car only has 24k miles on it however.

The car gets mixed duties, high rpm runs, and normal city and highway driving and it's still pretty consistent oil consumption. There are times when I didn't even need oil between oil changes.

In US, you can only buy the oil from a dealer (should be around 13.50 per bottle) or from performance shop vendors on this forum.

The only oil recommended is Castrol TWS 10-60, on the labels front and back it should specifically mention that it's approved for BMW M vehicles.

Note, there was a name change recently, and some dealers have switched. I think it is now called Castrol Edge Professional, but same thing, only can buy from dealer and performance shops.

Well back before Superfly shamed me (fecker), I was messing around with buying this: LiquiMoly 10w-60 Synthetic

Always had 2 quarts of 10W60 in the back of the M5, needed to add one every 3k. S65 is far better in that regard, and sound too, though another 85 bhp would be nice.

We haven't discovered a deficiency with the Castrol stuff so unless somebody comes out with something that proves to be comparable for significantly less money, I don't know why you would switch.

That means if you followed the factory intervals (15k), you would have had your oil changed 1.5 times just from replacing oil That's even more oil than the early 2000 e39 m5's ate!

Mine seems to burn less than all of my friends that have M3's here.. They all followed the break in, I followed my own break-in procedure. Not sure if it makes a difference but I have an inclination it does.
You may want to review BMW's spec on oil consumption. Allowable oil consumption with the S65 is higher than you think.

like others have said, there's no definite independently verified proof that other products are better, and the cost savings of switching is mimimal. In this case, why risk your warranty?

stick with TWS/Edge Professional

Liqui Moly Synthoil Racetech 10w60 is approved oil for our cars in Europe as I understand. Please correct if wrong. Pardon me for calling it Lubro Moly, I think that WAS it's name at one time.

I just did some research on how often I filled my oil since I bought my car. I bought my car on Feb 28th 2010. Since then, I have bought a qrt of oil on 2/21/12, 5/9/12, 8/15/12, and 10/25/12. I rarely redline the car. I'm averaging about 1000 miles a month. I'm not sure if I should be toping her off this frequently!

So 4 quarts over 8K miles? That's more than average but still not to point where I would be alarmed. BMW won't be concerned until you start using more than a quart every 1K miles.

My 2008 eats a quart every 2,000 miles. No oil spots on garage floor. Two SA's at two different dealerships gave me the "race car" line as well. lol.8

Really>? so 1 quart every 2K miles is not alarming?

its very simple the more oil your engine consumes the more "unhealthy" the engine is..there isnt a magic threshold were it crosses over from being normal to not normal. If you notice most guys complaining of oil consumption are driving older cars..its all very logical if you think about it along these lines.

From what I know about engines(heavily modded early 90's and only USA blocks) short run times and not really getting the engine up to temp tended to burn oil. I could run 500 miles on/off over 2 months in town and burn oil yet run 1500 miles (100 at a time) over 15-20 days and not lose a drop.

What's your point? I said it was more than average. BMW won't do anything for him. So you would be alarmed? And suggest to him what exactly? Replace the engine on his dime?

I purchased a new 2012 M3 9 months ago and I have about 6500 miles on it now. Yesterday got a warning on the dash that I need to add a quart of engine oil. Is this normal? We also have 2011 328i (inline 6 cylinder engine) and we have never had to add engine oil on that car.

Normal for the M3.
Uncharacteristic for the 328i but normal.
I've owned both.
