the light shouldn't change, apparantly there is some sensor that is smart enough to detect excess particles in the air and switch from "recirc" to "fresh" and then back. (or the other way around, can't remember which setting is default)

Yup, my set is the same.

The filters are dark so it is hard to tell when you are due for a replacement. Unlike the white cabin filters on most cars which turn dark as they get dirty.

I am thinking the dark color is charcoal sprinkled on top. Anybody know for sure? Could be why they are so expensive.

checked manual and this filter is targeted to be changed every 2 years.

just got back from my 2 year dealer visit and mine still looks dark. so who knows if they check it much.

I drive with my windows down most of the time so no biggie to me
