I highly highly doubt that in '08 the model will be called an '07.5.

US situation
I know I have said it a million times but damn, I hope we get some automated manual right from 1st shipments here in the US. It will be such a shame to see all the non-enthusiast dorks with their new M3s while I am twiddling my thumbs waiting for a real 21st century tranny... It will truly be too much to bear.

I'm now seriously thinking about getting a manual instead of waiting an addtional 6-8 months for DSG. Dont think I can hold out. I know its kinda childish but I wanna be the first in my neighbourhood.

Enjoy your uber-modern, elitist slushbox automatic (when it comes out in 2010). |

2. It´s not my fault you are a retro-luddite. 3. Enjoy your 2008 M3 when I blaze by you with a real transmission. P.S. I´d rarely use the "automatic" mode with a SMG/DSG, if that makes any difference... |

Questions
And...
1. Do or do not non-enthusiast dorks buy hot new cars with little to no appreciation of the vehicles features and capabilities and heritage? 2. Is or isnīt it fair for a true enthusiast to also want to have something when it is fresh. IMO it is definitely a fun part of having a new vehicle to simply have it when it first comes out? 3. Go tell someone else they donīt have class before you know anything about me. |

Other than the US market, most of the world gets you mate new M engines with sequential boxes (no matter if they are SMG / ZSG / DSG / DCT).... I am seriously angry at BMWUSA for forcing BMW Gmbh into producing the M5 / M6 with a manual tranny. It completely put a blemish in an otherwise clean record for the M5 / M6 (other than the original M6 wheels in 1988). It completely dilutes the marque. As for the M3, figure 0.5 seconds per gear for an aggressive shift in a manual box. In a modern SMG, the shift time is 0.065 seconds, ZSG is supposed to be faster still. So for a 4 gear run the sequential box has a 4 X (0.5-0.065) = 0.435 second advantage over a manual. Modern cars live and die by this margin.....it is free if you wait for the right gear box.

I respect the technology in the dual clutch type 'manual' automatics for sure, but that is a far reach to suggest that a true enthusiast should not even consider a true manual. What is a Porsche GT3 buyer to do?

I'm sure the new tranny would be faster but I would prefer the standard manual just because we do not know how the new tranny stack up to race like conditions. Would the tranny overheat and have shifting problems? Would it wear the clutch faster? Would changing the two clutches cost more than one? Personally, I would wait for the technology until BMW gets rid of all standard manuals. That is when BMW is confident that it is superior in longevity and performance compare to the standard manual. That is when I will buy one.
I can see being the first is also, but the standrad manual is my preference for now. |
