Does this tire repair look right???

When I had taken off the factory 19" summers in October I had noticed one of my front tires had a nail in it. I recently took the wheel and tire to the Kal Tire on Edmonton Trail in Calgary to have it fixed. I had got the car late September, so my wheels were absolutely MINT. Not even the smallest mark or scratch.

I picked up the wheel and tire late yesterday afternoon, and was in a rush to get somewhere else. I should have known something was up because they didn't charge anything and placed it in the trunk of my car for me. By the time I noticed the damage, they were closed.

Obviously I'm ticked off about the damage to the wheel, but does the plug look ok? Is it supposed to have a hole in it? Would it be safe to go on a track?

wait, this shots are AFTER they "repaired" the tires ??? HELL no its not done right, take it back and get on there faces.

they just took the nail out and since air didn't leak out they didn't patch it!

+1 prob patched frm the inside... its going to be hard to get them to pay up for the rim damage though..

They didn't charge you, so there would be no record of them repairing your wheel. Who scratched?!?!?! They never touched it...

you can't reliably plug a soft performance tire, needs to be patched.

I'm sure it is patched properly on the inside. Poor of them to scratch your wheel and not tell you though.

How safe are patched tires for aggressive street driving?

Like many owers on this forum, I push my car to its limits even on the street.

Considering that tracks often have run off areas and city streets do not; I 'm thinking that I should look into a new tire.

A proper repair is as safe as the rest of the tyre. The method is to drill a hole through the hail hole and pull (from the inside to the outside) a solid conical plug of rubber with a patch on the base. The patch on the base glues onto the inside of the tyre and seals the plug in place. I've had several repairs on my E46 M3 tyres without a problem, the only important thing is that the puncture is in the main area of the tread and not through the sidewall.

FWIW, Kal Tire doesn't charge for puncture repairs. I had to bring two tires from my wife's X5 to them with nails in the past month. When I thanked them for not charging me, he informed me they never charge for puncture repairs. That said, they repaired it from the outside, and never removed the tires from the wheels.

Sorry to hear about the wheels damage. That is really poor.

I would never bring anything to Kal Tire that would involve removing a tire from the rim. They are brutal

Safest way is to plug and patch the hole... a little redundant, yes but for high performance tires it is the best way to do it. Patches are applied to the inside of the tire and are the best overall. Plugs are glued into the hole, typically without ever taking the tire off the rim. I have had plugs fail several times, but never a patch.

If you are an aggressive driver have both done... plug first, then patch... The shop will look at you like you are a nut, but it works. As far as tracking, it is never suggested in using a repaired tire on a track and some tracks prohibit it.

Definately a patch!

I was told by my tire guy that speed rated tires like the PS2 MUST be patched as the plugs are not speed rated. He also told me that patches are MUCH more durable/flexible, etc. and that is why they have to use patches on our types of tires.

As for the wheel damage, I would be pissed beyond all repair! I personally stand there and watch them do the work, everytime. I then tip the guys after they are done. lol At any rate, I would have complained right then and there. Trying to go back after the fact will be fruitless. Put yourself in the owners shoes...some dude comes back the next day and claims you scratched his wheels...yeah, right!
