Why not 85 then? Why does BMW even make a recommendation? You're absolutely right about the ECU and like you said it has to sense knock before it adjusts cylinder timing and using lower than recommended octane will provide it plenty of knock to prevent. Using 87 or 89 in a pinch won't hurt anything and that is what the ECU adjustment is for. It also adjusts for changes in oxygen levels due to altitude. Ever notice that 85 octane is usually only found at higher elevations and 91 is the highest octane you can get at those same stations? Thinner air means lower compression, so you can get away with a lower octane. Consistent use of other than the recommended fuel will damage your engine and you risk voiding your warranty. I'm just trying to point out that going against the manufacturer's advice is not good for your wallet or your engine. Don't have to take my word for it, though... Straight from BMW: "Do not use any gasoline below the specified minimum fuel grade. Otherwise the engine could be damaged." BMW recommends 93 octane with a minimum fuel grade of 91. Take that money you're saving on lower octane and have your ECU re-mapped for 87. Sure it will void your warranty but you're doing that anyway. |

Actually, after thinking about it, I agree with you about engine damage if one was to use low grade fuel constantly as excessively retarded timing can increase cylinder bore wear (in addition to giving lower power and increasing harmful emissions)

I've been primarily using Irving 93 the last few years since they opened a new station nearby. I've continued to use them since I got the M3 as well.
My experience has always been positive and I haven't heard anything negative about them. They typically have the lowest prices near me as well...

I try hard for shells but I like to switch it up once in a while to Sunoco
It's more important to obtain fresh gas, but not too fresh. You don't want the stuff right off the trucks.

Also, I tend to support BP because they distribute 93 octane further West than anybody else, at least they have in my travels through the midwest. Everyone else switches to 91 or 92 somewhere around the MO/KS border.

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/aut...umping_gas.htm If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being stirred up when gas is being delivered, and you might be transferring that dirt from the bottom of their tank into your car's tank
