I have a 6MT and use it as a DD. As others have noted, the light clutch makes heavy traffic easily endurable.

Wise words, my friend . It's all about driving enjoyment to me, not being a tenth or two quicker, which is true about DCT but I don't care one bit.

Indeed. We have nothing better to do. Plus you can crawl on this car in first gear with the clutch out, so no clutch wear issues either.

I feel exactly the same way. Not until it's fully proven (if it ever is). The best solution to the quick-shifting problem seems to belong to MB with their planetary tranny with wet clutches, rather than a torque converter: reliability of a reuglar automatic transmission with the quick shifting of a DCT.

you don't buy the car to sit in traffic.

In my mind, a weekend with a 6mt m3 is worth 5 days of stop and go traffic during the week

I don't believe the issue should be between 6mt vs DCT, it really should be whether you want to be driving a M3 if you believe the majority of your drive will be in bumper to bumper traffic. It works, but there are other cars which I think would be better drive. I know I'd get a different car if I had lots of traffic to navigate through.

IMHO, DCT is better for any kind of traffic conditions!

+1. For an experienced MT driver, it should just be a non-issue to shift without even thinking about it, especially with the light M3 clutch.

When the road opens up though, you want to "feel" and "connect" with the car. Isn't this why we all buy this expensive toy?

And DCT somehow changes the this characteristic? Why would you rev high in traffic anyway?

Yes, you keep thinking that hard enough, and it may become true.

I drove in DC traffic everyday with a manual. If you are used to stick it is no big deal at all

As mentioned, the clutch is so light it's not even an issue. In fact it's probably the lightest clutch I've ever driven. If you were talking about a GT3 then that's a different story.

I can't think of another DD when considering all of the following factors: trunk space, rear seats, performance, look, comfort features when the car is fully loaded. The clutch is so light that you will not have problem keep the clutch pressed in all the time when waiting in traffic.

I'm actually in the same dilemma... For the people who aresaying the 6mt is no problem for traffic, have you guys driven a updated dct? Before I started test driving the 2011's, it was a no brainer for me. 6MT! But the updated dct has improved a milestone in my books. So much that it would be a foolish thing to do to not consider it or even drive it.

For the record, to support many comments on this thread, the clutch on my M3 is lighter than on my 4-banger Honda Accord... pretty amazing.

That being said, I just filled up the Accord and got 30.5 MPG with significant city driving. If you have a long commute, the M3 makes little sense... unless you have a Ferrari and GT3 in the garage too.

I use my 6MT M3 as a DD, no problem. I don't drive in traffic much. If I did I might feel otherwise.

But frankly, I really don't care what transmission I have. The 6MT is not the nicest transmission I've driven but it aint bad and when you nail a downshift perfectly it's as good as sex. The DCT shifts faster and nails it all the time, but the machine is doing it, not you. Other than that, the DCT costs a couple grand more.

Cheers.

Fiddling with a clutch in traffic isn't fun no matter how easy the clutch is. A 6MT guy is generally going to say its fine cause that's what he has. A DCT guy is going to say its great because you don't have to do anything. Bottom line is you're leg has to go up and down constantly in a manual transmission, end of story. I've driven light and heavy clutches in traffic, neither are fun and after a short distance, becomes quite annoying. I still own a GT500 which only comes in a 6MT, and yes I drive it in traffic, but I also become annoyed jacking the clutch in traffic. But the GT500 isn't my DD. My M3 will be and thus I got a DCT among many other reasons. When I went to test drive an M3 I was on the fence about getting the 6MT. That was until I drove the DCT and that sealed the deal. If the DCT had driven like any other auto transmission, I probably would have a 6MT on order. But that's just my reasoning, everyone will have a different take.
