C&D Lightning Lap - M3 places 3rd in price class
Just got my bathroom reading material in the mail, and M3 bests a lot of cars to place 3rd in the price class. Not surprisingly, the CTS-V and vette beat it, but everything else falls behind the M3. They blame the M3's time on the DCT, which put up it's best time in full auto mode.

"But the real difference was the M3’s automated manual gearbox, which didn’t want to downshift on command, and our best lap was achieved while driving the car in pure automatic mode."
OUCH... helps solidify my decision to go forward with a 6sp.

I wonder, though, if a 6mt would have been able to shave 2 seconds off the time to beat the CTS-V. If they did one run, and the car wouldn't downshift, I can see the 6MT making a difference, but with multiple runs over 2 days in different modes, I'm not so sure. Even with the 6MT, I think the M would have probably still finished 3rd.

Yes...I know (coming from a M DCT believer here). I hope BMW fixes any software glitches, etc., or this is the biggest scam on the options list.

< $60k
Don't know about you guys, but I can't buy the M3 I'd want for $30k-60k (their goofy 'LL2' classification). Much closer to $70k. CTS-V doesn't belong in there yet either. I can't exactly walk down to my dealer and pick one up like the other cars in the list, and it looked like the others were 2008 (not '09).
Not a very rigorous classification by the geniuses at C&D. |
