Wow, crazy timing as you just picked up the car. Oh well its a lease anyways and it will be nice to have a new engine.

Hopefully this all falls under warranty and they get you on the road again soon.

Did you at least get a good loaner car?

I've never leased a car, but I'd assume in this situation, it's better that it's leased.

Isn't it actually bad that it is a lease, since you'll be driving a loaner for an extended period of time?

Just spoke to my dealer. Looks like I spun the crank shaft bearing. They sent a few photos up the chain and waiting to get an approval... Fingers crossed that this will be a smooth process

what caused the engine to self destruct? Was it rod bearings? So much for the myth of the M3 being "built like a tank"

This is a lame false generalization of the M3. There are still an extremely small fraction of engines that have had this occur.

Mine has the same stain/build up and has for a long time. I bet it's common and people just don't notice.

I doubt this liquid came out last night, so probably a few days/weeks ago. I attached some photos. Also, nothing leaked from under the car last night or this morning...

Very hard to get a good photo of this stain so please bear with me.

Engine replacement

I don't know what the turn around time for you in getting a new engine but mine was a month. If you leased your car and it takes that long you could ask BMW Financial to waive a month lease payment for you were deprive of the car for that long.

Right, but with the lease he'd be making rental payments on a car he isn't driving.

yea... which is the unfortunate thing. but aren't we all making payments on our cars? if he was financing the car he'd also be making a payment on a car he isnt driving.

hopefully for his sake the dealer gave him a decent loaner

Well there have been a decent handful of people with rod bearings seizing up but haven't heard of the crankshaft bearings being an issue. I'm sure they'll get you sorted out. Did you plan to buy the car out at lease end? If so, depending on how you look at it, a new engine could be a very good thing.

And this is why I don't go beyond cosmetic mods...
