Should I get an E92 M3 or a 2011 F10 535i?
Hi guys,
So here is my situation, I am (or was?) in the market for an E92 M3 and I'd be spending around $50k on a used 08-09 M3 with <30k miles. I LOVE the car and I've owned a E46 for a while and it was amazing. But I did get into a lot of trouble with it, (tickets, arrested for racing, etc) and I still have my license but I'm walking a very thin line. My brother recently got a 08' 535i and it is a very nice car, 20' 3pc Asantis etc and its a great looking car and I do enjoy driving it. Just out of curiosity I looked up the F10 535i, slightly used ones and there are some surprisingly under $50k with 10k miles or less. Obviously they are in two different categories but in some weird way I want to convince myself to get the F10. I have matured a lot (I'm only 21, don't hate) and don't speed (actually I am paranoid of cops now and It's not worth getting a ticket or in my case arrested) and literally drive like there is a cop behind me ALL the time. So if I did get an E92 I'd drive following the law. So all in all, What would you guys get? And why? and any other thoughts? |

Your young and even though the 535 is a great ride (and much newer), the M3 will be a lot more fun and feel a lot more alive... that is if you can be cautious enough with it. I didn't have a ticket for almost 10 years and got one first year with my M3. Was more bad luck than me being stupid but it still happened.
Get the 535 when your married have a kid and you need the 4 doors and backseat... unless you are married and have a kid then get the 535.

haha, well the reason I ask is because I am looking at (and very close to making a deal) on an 09 M3. But now I don't know which direction I should go in. I know that either way which ever car I end up with I'll be very happy with, but I'll be a lot happier with an M3…haha

well, we're all here on M3post for a reason... so if you're asking this crowd, im sure everyone's gunna tell u to pick up the M3.
Also you're young. To me the 5 series has always seemed like it'd be for an older age group. I wouldn't think about getting into one unless I had kids on the way ~3 years or so. At 21 there was no way I would ever think twice about getting a 5 series. It wouldn't have been sporty enough. Ultimately it comes down to what you want. If you really think the E92 will get you in more trouble with the law, then I suppose you can pick up the 5, but cmon realistically, wheres the fun in that Live on the edge!

Buy a minivan until your record is clean then go E92.

I think the F10 would be better, since it's comfortable, still quick, still handles well, larger so that it can hold more people, newer, more practical, good looking, and from what you tell us, priced reasonably. |

Go with the newer car, regardless of model. Do not buy an 08 M3 with high miles and or outside of warranty, it can be a VERY expensive mistake, especially for a young guy.
My honest opinion is at 21, go with your brain and not your heart. |

You didn't tell us if you test drove the M3 or not. That would be a HUGE step. Many of us on this forum just fell in love with the car and bought it based on a test drive.

21? Get the M3 and enjoy your youth... forever. The 5-series is a business man's sedan. I'm a business man and I would never want one. M3 all the way!

I did test drive the M3. And the sounds of the engine revving, especially when you drop a gear with the DCT. I started working and finished college so I feel old…maybe my old side is telling me to get the 5...

I obviously don't know your finacial situation, but I would imagine your insurance premium would be very steep with an M3, especilly given your past driving issues you mentioned. Just something to consider...maybe.

Well my dad is the primary on the insurance and im just an additional driver so my premium isn't all that bad. The agent said some stuff about blanket insurance…Dont know, it is something I am worried about but its not a factor in what car I'll get. Better to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission, so when my dad gets the insurance bill AFTER I get the car then I'll pretend I didnt know. hehe I work for him 12+ hours a day so he'll get over it.

I think the interior of the f10 is loads nicer than any 3 series. you will have the latest electronic stuff (bluetooth, upgraded idrive, good sound system) and you will have much better mileage .
considering your situation -- i would opt for the 5 series

Come to think of it, I'm a little concerned about your mental health. Why would a 21 years old think of getting a 535 and not M3?? Have you stopped any of your medications lately? Do you feel tired most of the time? Do you have trouble sleeping at night?

M3. The 5 series is floaty. M3 is more of a drivers car.
