Not sure I understand your question? Do you mean how does the OEM hold up or how often do people replace their factory exhaust? Also, the x-pipe and exhaust systems are separate items. They don't need to be changed at the same time.

When does a typical factory muffler need replaced? I see brakes, fluids wheels battery maintenance schedule here but no mention of mufflers.

There is no need to replace a muffler/exhaust unless it rusts out or gets punctured. How long that takes is based on your climate, conditions driving, etc. Otherwise, it'll last forever.

Your catalytic converter needs to be replaced overtime but not the muffler.

Like the muffler, it needs to be replaced when it starts leaking or if the OBD computers determine it is non-functional. The catalyst does break down over time, but it depends wildly on driving style and sometimes just luck. They should last at least 8-10 years unless you're running really rich or something.

Or putting leaded fuel in it because your summit catalog race guru friend told you would make more power.

Is this something I'm going to have to send to Blackstone now, like rod bearings? Do I have to crawl under the car and take pics each time or will they take my word for it? Should I start replacing the muffler each time I change the oil or would every other time suffice? I knew that owning a BMW was going to be expensive, but this is too much!

Are you serious? Where the hell are these freaking muffler bearings? I've spent hours tearing the car apart looking for them. I've even called every BMW repair shop and they just laughed at me and hung up. Am I missing something here? LMK so I can jump on this right away!

Really....How often do you NEED to replace the backcat?! Probably not soon... Actually the engine will run without them. Might need a little tune up. People are starting to replace the once on the 2002s!!!! You might need to replace it when it rusts and have a bunch of holes.

Warning: if you replace it watch out for the dog that's inside!!!! And don't spill the fluid. It will etch your driveway.

Next question....How often do I replace the badges? How often do I replace the paint on my car....

Good luck with your DIY
