Want a lighter M that handles well, but has a real M motor, get a Z4MC, the ugly ass-bastardised 1M is no faster. It's a bit of a downgrade from a M3 to a 1M IMO. I had the choice and went M3. Nothing the 1M has (if it was better) can make it better than the E92's glorious motor (forget the rest).

... would buy a Cayman R over a 1M in a heartbeat.

Maybe with a a couple of fatties in the M3 and a 1M drained of all fluid since it only really weighs around 240lbs less... oh the hype.

So the M3 has a narrow body of water separating two land masses over the 1M? LOL.

I have no doubt the 1M has a fine engine and the next M3 probably will too. Large N/A engines will soon become a thing of the past on mainstream cars and we will all have to accept that. I am sure when the next M3 does appear it will be well recieved and I would love one, but right now I love my current M3.
Anyway, I have to say on looks alone I simply could not live with a 1M. It is short and stubby and does not appeal to me at all. Obviously this is a subjective view but that is what opinions are.... |

Yes, because we can't afford it and are super jealous of all the amazing people that drive 1M's.
Hate to break it to you, I could have had a 1M if I wanted or just kept my Z4MC which was essentially a 1M with a real M motor and better looks. ... to each their own.

A lot of arguments in this thread are based off of specs and technicalities. How many of those commenting have driven a 335is or 135i? How about ANY turbocharged car? They are shocking at first, but the sensation of torque wears off on you over time. It takes a pretty long time but eventually, I believe after driving a true N/A M car, it will get old.

I am getting so sick of people down playing the m3. If you think it's to fat and has too much luxury then don't buy one. I am a track driver and I love the m3. I love how it does everything. Fast luxuries, beautiful exterior and one hell of an engine. Now I am sorry and I know everyone is going to say Ooooo your a m3 fanatic and I need to hope off it's d***k. But that where your wrong. The car has been out since 2007 and it still competes with the very best cars coming out in 2011. That alone speaks volumes on how the car was designed. Secondly to the op it's your money your car stop asking for opinions on what car to buy and have your own mind and pick the car you want. I personally think the 1m is just a funny looking car that I couldn't look at everyday. Last thing if you think BMW has lost there edge in quality then why the hell are you buying one...
The e9x m3 lost it's heritage; that's funny... It didn't loose it's heritage it's just moving along with the time and i for one am glad that it is. |

I'm getting a used Z4M convertible in a few years. That car with the glorious S54 engine is simply epic. The 1M simply cannot match the driving experience of that car..

I got a chance to drive a 1M a few weeks ago and was surprised in 2 ways.
1.It IS very fast off the line. I mean I knew it was going to be but SO much faster feeling than the e46 M3 which has the same HP rating. It also felt just as quick off the line as the e9x m3. 2.The part I suspected but was still surprised at how much a factor it was, is the delivery of the power and how that changed the enjoyment of the car. Nobody that has driven both and who likes a motorsport-like engine, could say the 1M is more "fun." The torque was boring IMO as it was just like a TON of cars on the road. The m3 just is a totally different feeling and only driving one can really describe it so those who have owned or driven one know exactly what I am talking about. It basically boils down to 1.The m3 looks so much better and few can really argue this although there will always be some outliers 2.The engine in the m3 feels like a race car, sounds like a car and is flat out FUN to drive if you are someone who wants the F1 "feel" or as close as you can get. The 1m is probably as fast or faster on many circuits and on daily driving but to me and many that really means nothing at all. The driving experience is about enjoyment and the smile it brings. The m3 can bring a bigger smile than the 1m for the reasons mentioned and that is what it simply boils down to. I mean a Jeep SRT8 can out accelerate an M3 or a 1M but does that mean we all jump into one? Again nothing else feels like the m3 whereas tons of high torque cars feel like the 1M. |
