So a few members have reported back with the 255/275 combo on ZCP wheels. Is anyone running those widths on the 220M wheels?

Awesome thanks for the update.

My car is a ZCP and I plan on putting eibachs springs with 15/12mm spacers. Super Sports @ 255 & 275 will follow shortly.

Unhappy

I hate to report this, but I feel obligated to the community to convey my experience with the Michelin and their "miracle" PSS'

I had 275/35/18's and 285/35/18's mounted on my apex arc-8's the week before heading to the track on saturday. Commuting on them for a week broke them in and got them heat cycled for the track.

I am glad I tested these tires before the one lap of america competition because now I know they won't last anywhere near what they claim.

Yes they grip very well in both the wet and dry but after only one day on them they chunked and corded on the fronts. VERY disappointing. The supposed race rubber on the outside came off in large chunks. I don't know if it's a bonding issue or what but the wear did not come off evening. HUGE chunks of outside tire wall came off (see pictures below). Yes I was running stock alignment with -0.8 camber and I admit I could have used more negative camber but the tire should not have worn this way.

Whats also disappointing is when I contacted tirerack who spoke to michelin, they just told me to call their 800 number.

So I go out on a limb to try a brand new tire, spending lots of $$ on this event only to be disappointed by the tire and then but their response. I'm not trying to claim their 30k mile warranty, I'm just trying to make sense of chunks of rubber falling off the outer edge. I also had to buy more tires to get ready for one lap of america. I regret trying out this tire - should have waited for someone else to be the guinea pig first.

This may be a good street tire but for competition, I don't think so.

Wow, that is disappointing. How hard were you driving? So if I drive on the SS for a track weekend with the BMW club at an intermediate level would you expect this kind of result, or is this just because you pushed to an extreme?

I was driving VERY mildly and realized that there was more wear that I expected. (I measured with a caliper) and then realized that I won't be able to use it at one lap and then decide to drive it hard like any other track day. I usually run RS3's and R6's just as hard without a problem and they last for 3-4 track days.

Looks to me that the outside edge is completely worn and the inside edge is almost intact. That would be a clear indication of not enough camber and tire outside edge getting too hot.

I am assuming these are the front tires? -.8 camber is not enough for our cars if you're pushing hard. I had similar issues with my Direzza Star Spec tires, although not that extreme, with -1.5 camber. That's why I just got the GC kit with camber plates.

Still, although predictable, this should not happen after a day of HPDS. Unless you were really racing out there.

Wow (regarding the chunking, etc)!!! However, this is exactly why I DIDN'T buy my SS's for the track. The performance (read the way they fall apart) of our stock PS2's on the track, reported 100's of times, should have been a clue that the new SS's weren't going to be a miracle tire. There are tires for extreme street use (or those wanting to push street tires to the extreme) and tires for the track (Bridgestone, Yoko's, Nittto's, etc.). I'm actually not surprised that this would happen.

Just my .02!!

Wow - that is some serious wear for one day. What pressure were you running hot? I was able to get a decent number of days on the PS2's when I went through the set I had.

Yeah thats the same that I run. I hope Michelin makes it right with you. I was at a performance show a few months back and the Michelin Rep told me he thought these might make a good compromise track tire (ie. Street and track use) as they were positioned between the PS2 and PSC.

Thanks for sharing! Good luck!

There's a lot more camber in the factory adjustments and if you're going to be tracking the car it's a good idea to take advantage of it ($0) before you get track wheels and tires ($3k, plus another set of front tires apparently...). Looks like you were pushing like a broom...

Still, I doubt that's what's supposed to happen even under extreme conditions. Did you call Michelin's customer service number?

For what it's worth, there are R-compound tires out there that will do that too if you don't shave them and run them at race pace.

Mine have been great on the road so far (wet and dry) but I was planning on using these for my track days as well

Something is up here... I tracked a set of Hankook Ventus EVO and this did not happen and they would be much worse than these I expect. Either something was wrong with the tires or something is up with your car IMO. The original PS2 would have performed better than this and there is no way Michelin would have released its flagship performance tire if this is how it performs at the track. Something else is going on here...

Michelin check your google alerts - we need a rep in here stat. You've got some explaining to do. I'm shopping for a set of new tires right now.

Agree, just being at factory camber settings should not result in wear anything like this for less than one track day. Seems to me like a failure (ironically) with the "endurance" rubber compound on the outer edge. Would be interesting to see details of how this bi-compound structure is manufactured.

Just a reminder: One Lap rules make ONE SET of non R comps mandatory.
Tire management is a significant part of this particular contest.

In other words, Jeremy Clarkson could never win.
