Time to flush the coolent?
Car has 30k miles. Anytime I'm driving in the city, my oil temp indicates slightly above the 210 mark. This happens even when driving very conservatively on longer stretches of open road without the AC on. On spirited driving, the temp goes up even higher. I can only get it to show up slightly under the normal 210 mark on extended highway cruising.
So what do I need to do - add more coolant, change the coolant, nothing? Will this be done as part of the condition based service from BMW if I ask them to? |

It sounds like you are only a few degrees higher than where my car runs in 80 degree weather, close enough to call it normal.
The water/coolant temp will generally run flat and stable once the thermostat is fully open, so the oil temperature is more a reflection of engine load and how effectively your oil cooler can dump heat (ambient air temp and air flow are the big influences here). Just as oil temp climbs a bit in stop-and-go traffic due to lack of air flow through the oil cooler, over the miles the cooler can accumulate airflow blockage due to heavy insect hits or other debris. Might be worth a look. I've seen leaves and plastic bags blocking coolers as well. On some cars I've done a medium pressure power wash from the rear face of the cooler to blow out all the junk. The owner's manual has a section on checking the coolant level. But it seems like you don't have anything abnormal in your description to be concerned about.
