Review: 3M Paint Defender Spray
To begin with I should say that the car I applied this to is not a daily, never sees rain, and is garaged all the time. It's practically a weekend car so please keep this in mind when you are reading this review.
The kit is pretty self explanatory and acts basically as a clear bra, but obviously not as durable. The instructions are very simple and easy to follow. I asked Nick before I got the kit what the difficulty level was and he said just follow instructions to the t and you will be fine. He didn't lie and the whole process took right around the estimated 30 minute mark. I love how everything you need is included in the full kit so you are ready to go. You need something to hold up the hood a little (if you choose to protect the hood that is) but you can easily use one of the boxes that the products are in. On to the pictures: Cover can easily cover my whole car just make sure to unravel it all the way. Almost didn't see the folds! This is the section I chose to protect. I have one or two chips here so I thought it would be a good area to test. Car already had ocw but I thought I might add the 3m synthetic wax for added protection. Can't tell much of a difference but it was very glossy Shake it like a Polaroid picture...for one minute And ready to spray As instructed half the hood at a time. Three coats with the first being horizontal, then vertical, and finally horizontal again. I kept the sprayer about 6-8 inches away from the hood and went in a slow and continuous motion. Whole hood finished. Close up to show the required finished once properly completed. Need that heavy orange peel look. After it was all done I was curious to see how much of the spray was left. I was shocked to find out there was a good half of it there. I can easily say that the one bottle should be able get your whole hood and possibly the front bumper. One tip I would give though is wear gloves. I didn't and when I went to take the tape off my fingers got in contact with the spray and it was like Elmer's glue but on steroids. Really hard to get off but I guess that's a good thing for protection I'm still waiting for that 4 hour dry period and then I will wait the full 4 days to show sun pictures. I only leave the car on the garage so I assume the full 4 days are required for proper curing time. As far as durability goes I will update as often as you gents would like. One month? Two months? Whatever you want since I think I can make this last for the claimed 1 year mark 3M gives. If you have any questions/comments/criticisms feel free to respond. Thanks again |

So the spray has fully cured and I've taken some pictures to show the final results. It looks just like I would have expected and as a clear bra type should. The line is not that noticeable and can only be seen when relatively close. The paint flows very well and it doesn't seem to have toned up/down the color at all.
Interesting result was the dotted effect that is pictured at the end. I have no idea why this has happened or what may have caused it, but I don't like the look to much. It's not noticeable until you get in front of the car, but still bugs me. It's not all over the sprayed area but there are maybe 3-4 patches like the one pictured and mainly close to the tape line. |

there was either something on the paint while curing or sray error that's why that effect happened in the last pics. Looks pretty decent for what it is, but very heavy orange peel.

Maybe dust? Lol honestly dont know since car was in the garage the entire time. I dont think it could have been application since I followed the instructions to the t and the final results looked just the way they were supposed to, but it could be a possibility for sure. Overall not bad for something that costs ~$40.

I was going to point out how bad this is but I think your pictures talk for themselves. Wish you had asked ab this product, i would have tried to dissuade you. It's not about the $40 that this 3M defender junk cost it is about applying it to a $75K car ! Good luck removing that without heavy polishing and therefore eating at your expensive OEM clearcoat limited capital. When i prepared for ED, i searched around for some temporary protection, found that product. Thanks to negative reviews by people driving camry's (!!) i decided to stay clear from it with an M3. Sorry to see. Hurts a bit like seeing a keyed M3.

i wish you all the best with that bro. Aerosol can or not, once solvent evaporates what's left can be hard as resin and may take months to take off SAFELY. You can probably remove it with an acidic APC but that's really not good for the paint.

I've applied this on my front lip for some protection against rock chips...haven't had any issues removing it, no left over residue. I think it works great for small areas such as this.

Do you plan on leaving it on for a while or are you going to remove it shortly? I'm curious how easy/hard it is to remove.
